Die Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über gesicherte Beispiele völlig oder weitgehend mitteleuropäischer (extramediterran-europäischer) Verbreitungsareale bei Insecta, Chelicerata, Myriapoda und Mollusca und versucht eine Deutung solcher Areale. Die Beispiele legen eine extra mediterrane Überdauerung während der pleistozänen Vereisungen in überraschend vielen Fällen nahe, weshalb die Ausdrücke "mitteleuropäisches" oder "extramediterran- europaisches" Faunenelement auch im strengen arealanalytischen Sinn (von De Lattin und anderen) berechtigt scheinen. Die betreffenden Arten gehören überwiegend zum Oreal und Dinodal, seltener auch zum Arboreal. Die Notwendigkeit der Erstellung verläßlicher Punktverbreitungskarten in verstärktem Ausmaß wird hervorgehoben. The paper presents examples of well-known distribution patterns of Insecta, Araneida, Myriapoda and Mollusca in Europe, which exclude the Mediterranean region and Asia largely or totally. From these facts the possibility of overwintering of such species in extra-mediterranean parts of Europe during the pleistocene glaciations is suggested. The terms Central European faunal elements or Extra-mediterranean European faunal elements may therefore be used in the narrow sense of De Lattin and others. Most of these species belong to the chorological units of Oreal and Dinodal, but some clearly belong to the Arboreal. Letters from fellow workers suggested that now might be an appropriate time, and that a symposium should be held in Lunz. Today it is clear that large congresses are losing their value because of the difficulty of attending all relevant lectures and of finding colleagues. In consequence, small symposia for specialist groups are becoming increasingly important. As I felt that the success of such a symposium must depend on the suggestions from its potential members, I sent out in April 1973, together with a first circular, a questionnaire, asking for opinions on time and length of the symposium, numbers of participants, types of communication, interests within Trichopterology, and lan guages which should be used. The majority of answers suggested the following: The number of participants should be between 20 and 50, and the duration, excluding excursions, should be three to five days; main interests were in ecology and systematics, but there were also interests in physiology, behaviour, zoogeography, morphology, cytotaxonomy and evolution. There was a clear preference for local excursions. Languages should be English, French and German, with a preference for English. The symposium should consist of both formal papers and informal progress reports, with adequate time for discussion. The arrangements have therefore been based on these results.

Einleitend werden die Köcherfliegen und ihrer Lebensansprüche sowie die typischen Lebensräume, überwiegend Fließgewässer, kurz gekennzeichnet. Die angewendeten Erfassungsmethoden werden besprochen, und es wird auf die Probleme der Freilandarbeit mit ihren möglichen Fehlerquellen hingewiesen. Jede Köcherfliegenart ist, so wie jeder andere Organismus, mit ihrem Ökosystem durch ein multidimensionales Funktionsnetz verknüpft. Der herkömmliche Weg der Erforschung ihrer Lebensansprüche verläuft aber linear, wobei man in der Regel Korrelationen erhält, die nur zu oft für Kausalität gehalten werden. In diesem Buch wird ein anderer Weg zum Verständnis versucht. Der visuelle Eindruck eines typischen Lebensraums erlaubt dem erfahrenen Praktiker, Voraussagen über das Vorkommen von Arten, von Vergesellschaftungen von Arten und von Funktionszusammenhängen zu treffen. Diese Vorgehensweise ist für andere Organismen, vor allem für Pflanzen, nicht neu, auch nicht für Schmetterlinge, Libellen und andere Insekten, wohl aber für Köcherfliegen. Es werden typische Lebensräume vorgestellt, die vom Verfasser selber untersucht wurden oder aus der Literatur gut bekannt sind und für die halbwegs aussagekräftige Daten vorliegen. Die vorgestellten Lebensräume stellen aber nur eine mehr oder weniger zufällige Auswahl dar. Es ist ein erster Schritt in diese Richtung. Das Buch gibt eine Übersicht über Lebensräume von Köcherfliegen - Vergesellschaftungen an Hand von Fotografien ausgewählter Stellen zusammen mit Listen der dort festgestellten Arten. Ergänzend werden Seehöhe und geographische Koordinaten angegeben, der Untergrund wird vermerkt und, soweit vorhanden, werden Informationen über die Wassertemperatur der betreffenden Gewässer gegeben. Die ausgewählten Stellen sind in einem Nord-Süd-Transekt von Lappland bis Tunesien angeordnet, mit einer Verbreiterung im Mediterrangebiet. Die Beispiele aus Mitteleuropa sind in erster Linie aus Osterreich, Norditalien und Südfrankreich genommen, die mediterranen vor allem von Korsika, Sardinien, Griechenland und Portugal.
