Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Special Edition. Offering this antique French poetry collection, "Poesies Completes de Malherbe" by [Francois de] Malherbe, with Preface, Notes and Glossary by M. Pierre Jannet. Paris: Chez E. Picard, Libraire, 1867, Nouvelle Collection Jannet series. Publisher's blue percaline binding, gilt stamping to front and spine, with rough cut edges and some uncut top edges, 12mo, pp. VIII and 224 plus ads for additional publications in series. This edition of Malherbe's complete poems, part of the Jannet-Picard collection, is a significant 19th-century compilation of French classical poetry, representing an important historical curation of Malherbe's works, often sought after by collectors and scholars of French literature. A special feature on the inside front pastedown is the antique personalized book plate of the previous owner, Anatole de Montaiglon (1824-1895), who was a highly celebrated French bibliophile, art historian, and archivist. The motto on the plate reads, "De jour en jour en apprenant mourant." It is a famous Renaissance-era philosophical motto which translates literally to "From day to day, learning [while] dying," reflecting the idea of lifelong learning up until the moment of death. Overall condition is Very Good. Binding is secure, cover boards are bumped at corners and cloth has some grazing at edges. Yellow endpapers are in are clean, joints not cracked, back free endpaper has tight/flat crease (not easily visible). There is some light splotchy foxing scattered about, not much and not affecting the text; else no writing, creases or tears to pages. A nice, unique copy with the special provenance! [C3].…
