In den WarenkorbZustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 256 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The importance of thymus-dependent cells, or T cells, in the generation of a successful immune response was first realized in the early sixties. In the follow ing two decades, a succession of elegant experiments established the antigen specificity of T cells and their ability to perform both as regulatory and effector cells. T cells were shown to be essential in most immune reactions, playing a crucial role in augmenting the activity of effector T and B cells against 'foreign' antigen, as well as in the suppression of effector activity against self antigens. The means by which T cells differentiate 'foreign' from 'self' antigens is based on their recognition of antigen almost exclusively in the context of self major histocompatibility complex products, unlike B cells, which recognize an tigen alone. It is this recognition, mediated by the T-cell receptor, that sets into motion the diverse cell-cell interactions, which control the differentiation and regulation of the immune response. Although its importance was well established, the molecular nature of the T-cell receptor remained elusive for two decades. Many hypotheses as to its structure and precise function were put forward, using immunoglobulin as a basis for conjecture, but "the Holy Grail of Immunology" remained ephemeral until three years ago. In the ensuing years, both immunologists and molecular biologists have contributed to an explosion of data unsurpassed by any previous period in the field.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book is designed to have a comprehensive review of the spectrum of diseases involving orbital apex and periorbital skull base and the up-to-date advancement in different treatment modalities.Management of diseases at the orbital apex and periorbital skull base has always been a challenge. Multiple specialties are involved, including skull base neurosurgeon, oculoplastic ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon, oncologist, neurologist and radiologist. However, frequently it results into a ¿no-man¿s land¿, as no single specialty is entirely familiar with this complex and overlapping anatomical territory. Cranial nerves, carotid artery, and cavernous sinus are just one of the few examples of important anatomical structures that pass through. However, this has often been managed by one specialty especially during surgical planning and operation, resulting in biases in choices of approach and surgical strategies. We believe that this interesting yet complex region deserves special attention with a well-orchestrated multi-disciplinary effort.Traditionally, surgical treatments for diseases in this region involve different types of craniotomy and orbitotomy. In this book, it covers the advancement in imaging modalities, medical therapies, operative instruments, radiation therapy namely stereotactic radiosurgery or radiotherapy, management of diseases in orbital apex and periorbital skull base evolve and improve with time. Minimally invasive surgery in terms of mastering neuro-endoscopy contributes to the intervention advancement.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 300 pp. Englisch.
