In August 1897, he led five companies of the 36th Sikhs to the North-West Frontier Province of British India to guard the border against Pashtun raids, and his refusal to send reinforcements to the besieged 21 Sikh defenders of Saragarhi led to their brave last stand and deaths at the hands of the Afridis. With details of The Battle of Saragarhi, an incredibly unequal engagement fought on September 12, 1897, in which 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army defended a small communication post against an estimated 10,000 to 14,000 Afghan tribesmen (Orakzai and Afridi).
