Size 38.75 x 22.75 Inches. This is an 1859 U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart or map of the southern coast of Maine. Depicting portions of coastal Maine from the mouth of the Kennebec River and Seguin Island to Goat Island and Kennebunkport (although Kennebunkport is unlabeled), innumerable depth soundings are recorded here in aid of navigation. Coastal islands abound and are nearly all identified, along with many lighthouses, such as the Goat Island Light, the Wood Island Light, the Cape Elizabeth Light, the Seguin Island Light, the Pond Island Light, and the Breakwater Light near Portland. Coves, points, and bays along the coastline are also identified. Tables detailing the region's lighthouses, tides, and magnetic variations are included along the right border, along with notes concerning the depth soundings and abbreviations employed on the map. Publication History and Census The creation of this chart, as was the case with all U.S. Coast Survey charts, was a collaboration. C. O. Boutelle and T. J. Cram undertook triangulation work, while the topography was executed by A. W. Longfellow and I. Hull Adams. The hydrography was executed by parties under the command of M. Woodhull, S.D. Trenchard, and W.G. Temple. The whole work was compiled and produced under the supervision of A. D. Bache, one of the most influential Superintendents in the history of the U.S. Coast Survey. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. After Maine became a state, carved out of Massachusetts in 1820, the northern boundary was disputed between the U.S. and Canada. The King of the Netherlands was appointed arbiter and settled the dispute with a new border of his own imagining. The first edition of this map issued in 1846, shortly after the 1842 treaty established the new Maine-Canada border hence the map's title, 'A New Map of Maine.' This is a fine 1753 map of the French winemaking regions of Maine, Perche, Touraine, Anjou and Saumur by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers from Fougeres east to Chartres and from Domfront south as far as Parthenay and depicts the whole or parts of the modern day departments of Mayenne, Sarthe, Eure-et-Loir, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire and Vienne. The map renders the entire region in extraordinary detail offering both topographical and political information with forests and mountains beautifully rendered in profile. The important cities of Le Mans, Tours and Angers are identified. This region, which hugs the Loire Valley, is famed for is beautiful Chateaux and for producing some of the world's finest wines. Maine-et-Loire itself is home to the largest vineyard in the Loire Valley. It is also known for its production of Port-Salut, a distinctive, semi-soft cow's milk cheese. Indre-et-Loire is known for its production of Chenin Blanc, a white wine grape with a high acidity, and wide variety of goat cheeses, while the famous Chartres Cathedral is located in the Eure-et-Loir region. The map includes a beautifully engraved title cartouche near the right border. This map was drawn by Robert de Vaugondy in 1753 and published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal . For most visitors to Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is the Gateway to Acadia National Park - the only major national park in New England. A Closer Look The view looks southward on Bar Harbor, with the town pier in the foreground and Cadillac Mountain rising on the horizon. It highlights iconic Bar Harbor businesses as of 1990 - although many remain active. The map also features historical annotation and illustrations of local life and attractions: Door Mountain, Cadillac Mountain, Eagle Lake, The Bar, etc. Acadia National Park Mount Desert Island, so named because of its many bald rocky mountaintops, has been a tourist destination since the mid-19th century, when it was discovered by outsiders, artists, journalists, Hudson River School artists, and other patrons, known collectively as the 'Rusticators.' Undaunted by crude accommodations and simple food, they sought out local fishermen and farmers for accommodation and guidance. Summer after summer, the Rusticators returned to renew friendships with local islanders and, most of all, to savor the fresh salt air, scenery, and relaxed pace. Soon the villagers' cottages and fishermen's huts filled to overflowing, and by 1880, 30 hotels competed for vacationers' dollars. Tourism was becoming the island's primary industry. Drawing the attention of the wealthy and influential, the island was designated as Sieur de Monts National Monument by President Woodrow Wilson in July 1916. In February 1919, the area's status was officially changed from a National Monument to a National Park, making it the first National Park east of the Mississippi River. With the change to a National Park came a name change as well, to Lafayette National Park. It was not until January 1929 that the park was given its current name, Acadia National Park. Acadia is unlike most other National Parks, as its creation was encouraged by numerous private individuals. One, John. D. Rockefeller, purchased a summer home in Bass Harbor in 1910. Rockefeller began buying up land on the island with the goal of creating a system of carriage roads to make 'one of the greatest views in the world' accessible to all visitors. Maine's coastline appears in detail as well, with coves, harbors, points, and other landmarks noted. The highway network winds its way through the countryside. Vignette views of sailing ships from 1603 through the 20th century decorate the bay. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Augustus D. Phillips and Son in 1970. The map covers the state of Maine in superb detail, noting towns, cities, bays, islands, rivers, inlets and a host of other topographical features, with elevations rendered by hachure. It shows early county configuration. Offers color coding at the county level. The 'Monument Line,' 'Boundary claimed by Great Britain' and the 'Boundary decided by the King of the Netherlands' are all noted. The map also identifies the Madawasca and French Settlements. This map was published as plate no. 24 in Thomas G. Bradford's 1835 Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial . Bradford's atlas, published in 1835 was an important work on many levels. First, it was one of the first American atlases to follow an encyclopedic format, offering readers extensive geographical and statistical tables to supplement the maps themselves. Second, it was published in Boston and influenced the city's rise as a publishing center later in the 19th century (at the time most publishing in the United States was restricted to New York and Philadelphia). Third, this atlas was the first to contain a separate and specific map showing the Republic of Texas. Fourth and finally, Bradford's atlas in some instances broke the Euro-centric mold regarding atlas production. Among other things, Bradford focused his atlas on the Americas and abandoned the classical decoration common in European atlases in favor of a more informational and inherently American approach. Bradford published this atlas in several editions and with various partners. The first edition was published by William D. Ticktor and did not contain the iconic Republic of Texas map (although we have in fact seen Ticktor examples with a Texas map, suggesting, against conventional wisdom, that there may have been two Ticktor editions). The second official edition, published in the same year by the American Stationers Company, was the first to contain the Republic of Texas map, which is based on Austin's map, with two pages of descriptive text. A third edition was issued in 1836, also by American Stationers (though still dated 1835), and contained an unaltered Republic of Texas map with only a single page of descriptive test. A fourth edition appeared later, possibly 1837, and included an updated and revised map of Texas that replaces the old Mexican land grants with new inchoate counties. The maps from this atlas are an important addition to any collection focusing on early American cartography and Republic of Texas cartography. All maps in this atlas, though not specifically noted as such, were most likely engraved by G. W. Boynton of Boston, who also engraved most of the maps for Bradford's later publication. The map records the results of the Aroostook War (1838 - 1839) and the settling of Maine's northern boundary by the 1842 Webster-Ashburton Treaty. A Closer Look The map covers the state of Maine as well as adjacent parts of New Hampshire and Canada, including Quebec City. At this point, railroads penetrated Maine no further than Portland, underscoring the extent to which the state relied on its extensive river networks and roads for transport. The map includes a ghosted northern boundary demarcation that breaks the map's border - an element inherited from the 1835 Burr source map, which, when it was engraved, was an ongoing political conflict. Historical Context In 1841, Maine, which had achieved statehood just two decades prior in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise, was rapidly developing its own identity. Its vast pine forests were the backbone of a thriving lumber industry, which in turn stimulated shipbuilding in towns like Bath and Bangor. The expansive coastline supported a robust fishing sector, making Maine a pivotal hub for maritime activities. Additionally, the state's picturesque landscapes of mountains, lakes, and coastlines began attracting artists and early tourists, hinting at the role Maine would soon play as a revered destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking its tranquil beauty. Northern Border Dispute Of great interest, the map includes a ghosted northern boundary demarcation that breaks the map's border. The dispute over Maine's northern border was part of the larger Aroostook War (1838 - 1839), a non-violent confrontation between the United States and the United Kingdom during the 1830s and early 1840s. The disagreement stemmed from ambiguities in the Treaty of Paris (1783) and the Treaty of Ghent (1814) regarding the delineation of the boundary between British North America (later Canada) and the state of Maine. The contested region, rich in timber and known as the Aroostook Valley, became a flashpoint with both American and British settlers and lumberjacks moving into the area. Tensions escalated with both sides sending troops, but the conflict never resulted in direct military clashes. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 eventually settled the border dispute, which delineated the modern boundaries of Maine and what is now the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Walker map of the western section of the coast of Maine. The map depicts from Kittery east to Lincolnville and from Norway Lake and Snows Falls south to the Atlantic Ocean. Red overprinting highlights bicycle routes that meander through most of the region, including a coastal route. Bicycling in Maine in the late 19th century In the late 19th century, bicycling was popular throughout the United States. In Portland alone, there were more than forty bicycle stores by 1896. Dozens of bicycling clubs throughout the state organized tours. In his dissertation Pedaling Vacationland: Bicyclists, Genteel Recreation, and the Maine Landscape, 1878 1902 , Sam Shupe details the importance of Maine's bicycling culture and the reputation it gained not just in the northeast but across the country. Melville, a celebrated artist, lived and worked in and around Damariscotta and was president of the Damariscotta Information Bureau, the map's publisher. A Closer Look This map depicts the region from Damariscotta Lake to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Sheepscot River to Friendship Island. Charming illustrations highlight regional landmarks and historic sites, including the County Court House at Wiscasset, St. Patrick's Church, the Kavanagh House, Fort William Henry, and the Pemaquid Point Light. Lakes and ponds are illustrated and labeled. The local road network is highlighted in red, as is the office of the Information Bureau. Swan's Island is situated to the left of center with the towns of Swan's Island, Minturn, and Atlantic labeled. Burnt Coat Harbor, Seal Cove, and other coastal features are illustrated and labeled. The region's numerous islands, including Harbor Island, Marshall Island, and the extreme southern portion of Mount Desert Island, are noted. Short texts provide historical context. One states that Colonel James Swan bought the island in 1786, while another impresses that Sieur de la Mothe Cadillac sold enough timber from Swan's Island (then known as 'Brule Cote') to absolve himself from bankruptcy in the eyes of the French Courts. This is a map of the lakes and mountains of Maine and New Hampshire, the hunting and fishing lodges serving them, and the railroads allowing access to them from Boston and other coastal cities. It was printed in 1899 as a promotion for the Boston and Maine Railroad. A Closer Look The map depicts the region from the White Mountains northeast to New Brunswick, with the Maine Central Railroad's route prominently marked. Less imposing lines illustrate the region's other railroads, including the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Maine's many lakes, such as Moosehead Lake, Chamberlain Lake, the Eagle Lakes, and Grand Lake, are illustrated and labeled, along with the region's many rivers. Houses, hotels, and other properties catering to outdoor sports enthusiasts are identified. An inset in the upper left promotes the railway network between Boston and Vanceboro, Maine, with spur service to the Mount Desert Island Ferry and numerous lines running through the White Mountains. The Boston and Maine Railroad Commonly known as the 'B and M', the Boston and Maine Railroad was chartered in New Hampshire on June 27, 1835. The firm consolidated several smaller companies, including the Andover and Haverhill Railroad and later the Boston and Portland Railroad. It merged with the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts Railroad in 1842, but retained the Boston and Maine operating name. In the subsequent decades, it acquired or leased several other railroads, including the Boston and Lowell (1887), Northern (1884), Connecticut River (1893), Concord and Montreal (1887), and Fitchburg (1900). In 1910, it was acquired by J. P. Morgan and his New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The firm initially prospered on the development of mill towns throughout New England and later capitalized on tourism from urban centers in Boston and New York. Nonetheless, the railroad went through a decline during the Great Depression when most of the old textile mills closed. Part of the Boston and Maine network remains in operation today under Pan Am Railways (PAS). Publication History and Census This map was created by the Rand Avery Supply Company and published by the Passenger Department of the Boston and Maine Railroad in the 1899 second edition of Boston and Maine Railroad. A Closer Look Coverage embraces Maine, with numerous cities and towns identified. The lakes in the northern parts of the state are especially noteworthy, as here they retain Native American names, many of which were later changed. The railroad from Kittery to Portland is illustrated, as is the short line between Bangor and Orono (in fact extending to Old Town), the first in Maine and one of the first in the United States. The most intriguing element illustrated here reflects the changes to the border between Maine and British Canada established by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. The Aroostook War and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty The Webster-Ashburton Treaty ended the nearly bloodless Aroostook War (Pork and Beans War) and fixed the border between Maine and British Canada. The dispute over 13,000 square miles of land between modern-day Quebec and New Brunswick erupted over logging rights. This war, between British colonies in Canada, and American forces in the state of Maine, really should be called an international incident. There were no deaths, but two Canadian militiamen were injured, and several Brits were taken prisoner, but there were no significant engagements. The treaty, signed by U.S. Secretary of State Daniel Webster and British diplomat Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton, in August 1842, gave the United States over half of the disputed territory. Here, Bradford illustrates the newly agreed-upon border (noted as 'line proposed by the King of the Netherlands,' that is, William I, who attempted to arbitrate the dispute in the early 1830s), along with the 'line claimed by Great Britain' and the 'boundary according to the Treaty of 1783'. It is among the rarest maps issued by the Maine artist, with only two other examples known. Publication History and Census Coverage embraces Northeastern Maine from Pemadumcook Lake in the west, east as to the New Brunswick border, and from Squapan Lake and Mountain in the north, as far south as Brownville and Schoodic Lake. Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park appear on the left. Hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail, which terminates at Katahdin, are marked. So, too, are public and private boat launches, other hiking trains, forest service towers, state and federal highways, campsites, and fish hatcheries. Mount Katahdin Mount Katahdin, located in Baxter State Park in north-central Maine, is the highest peak in the state, standing at 5,269 feet (1,606 meters). It is renowned for its rugged beauty and is a focal point of the Appalachian Trail, marking its northern terminus. The mountain, whose name means 'The Greatest Mountain' in the Penobscot language, holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Penobscot Native American tribe. An unrecorded 1957 pictorial map of Belfast, Maine by local artist George H. Jennings. An impressive work of artistry, it highlights local businesses, attractions, and culture, especially the town's orientation towards the sea. A Closer Look Coverage includes the town of Belfast, Maine, with East Belfast, the Passagassawakeag River, and Belfast Bay, which meets the larger Penobscot Bay. Roads are labeled, including U.S.-1, which continues down the coast to Boston and beyond, and, in the opposite direction, northwards to the Canadian border. Churches, waterways, and several dozen local businesses are also marked. The Jennings family business - yachtsmen, coast pilot, marine appraiser, and compass adjustor - appears at bottom-right and bottom-left of the advertisement section. Illustrations appear throughout, including maritime motifs on the map and drawings relevant to the advertisements surrounding the map. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by George H. Jennings in 1957. It is unclear if the artist was the elder George H. Jennings, a ship captain, or his son, but presumably it is the latter given his subsequent artistic output. If so, this map would be a very early work in his oeuvre, produced during his adolescence or very early adulthood. This is an 1882 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey nautical map of East Penobscot Bay, Maine. A Closer Look Coverage embraces the eastern part of Penobscot Bay from the eastern portion of the Fox Islands to Herrick's Bay and from Cape Rosier to the Isle au Haut. The bay's numerous islands, thoroughfares, and other features appear in detail. Information concerning lights, buoys, tides, and a key to the abbreviations is situated in the upper right corner. Publication History and Census This map was compiled and published by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1882 during the superintendency of Julius E. Hilgard. We note five examples of the 1882 edition in OCLC, which are part of the collections at the Connecticut State Library, the Boston Public Library, the New Hampshire State Library, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University. Very good. Size 25.25 x 17.75 Inches. This is a c. 1915 Rand Avery Supply Company railroad map of Maine highlighting the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Covering from Belfast to Canada, a solid red line traces the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad's route. Cities, towns, and villages along the Bangor and Aroostook's route are labeled, including the then closed Katahdin Iron Works. Thin black lines follow the routes of the Maine Central Railroad, the Canadian Pacific Railroad, with a thicker black line emphasizing the Canadian Government Railway skirting Maine's northern and eastern borders. Lakes of varying size appear throughout, including Moosehead Lake near the left border. An inset map in the lower right presents the Maine Central Railroad and the Boston and Maine Railroad lines between Boston and Bangor. Dating the Map While undated, we are able to place the publication of this piece as c. 1915 because the bridge across the St. John's River connecting Van Buren, Maine, and St. Leonard, New Brunswick, did not open until 1915. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad operated in Maine from 1891 until 2003. Incorporated in 1891, the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad emerged from a merger of the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad and the Bangor and Katahdin Iron Works Railway. The railroad steadily expanded during the early 20th century, eventually connecting with the Canadian Government Railways at St. Leonard, New Brunswick, in 1915. In 1895, the Bangor and Aroostook began using heated box cars to haul potatoes, which they continued to do through the 1960s. Even in the post-World War II era, potatoes provided fifty percent of the railroad's income. However, it was not the advent of the interstate highway system that ended the railroad's relationship with potato farmers. During the winter of 1969 - 1970, due to systemic interchange issues caused by the Penn Central Transportation Company (another railroad), a large portion of the potato crop froze in the rail cars after the heaters ran out of fuel. This disaster caused several potato farms to go out of business and those that survived never again used rail transport. Other sources of income for the railroad included inbound chemicals and outbound paper from paper mills, transporting ammunition to Searsport during World War II, and taking coal and aircraft fuel to Loring Air Force Base during the Cold War. The railroad operated a morning and afternoon passenger train into the 1950s. The morning train, the Potatoland , made local stops from Bangor to Van Buren and St. Francis. The afternoon train, the Aroostook Flyer , only stopped at the most popular stations between Bangor and Van Buren. The Bangor and Aroostook was sold to Iron Road Railways in 1995, and after that company went bankrupt in 2002, Rail World acquired the line and incorporated them into the newly formed Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway. The railway changed hands a few more times before being sold to the Canadian Pacific in 2019.
