Engraved Facsimile of the 1215 Magna Carta, engraved by John Pine, engraved central panel of text, the vertical borders decorated with by a series of 25 coats-of-arms of the Barons, and a representation of the remains of King John's Great Seal in the lower border, all panels surrounded by oak leaf and acorn borders, approx. 695 x 480mm, laid down on linen and mounted on a roller, the linen browned and the text slightly so . Engraved facsimile of the Magna Carta, 'a sacred text, the nearest approach to an irrepealable fundamental statute that England has ever had (Pollock and Maitland, History of English Law), and the most celebrated legal document in the English-speaking world. The engraving was commissioned from John Pine (1690-1756), following the fire at the Cottonian Library in 1731, which resulted in the only copy known with King John's seal being severely damaged. It was Pine's copy that was used by William Blackstone for his translation in 1759. John Pine (1690-1756), was a publisher, print- and map-seller, as well as 'Bluemantle Pursuivant' at the College of Arms, and Engraver to the King's Signet and Stamp Office. The present issue, on paper, was published by the engraver's son and pupil, the portrait painter Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788). Given Robert Edge's dates, this must have been issued well 'after 1733' as suggested in on-line catalogues. Very scarce.

contemporary female ownership: Jane Saunderson (illustrator). contemporary female ownership: Jane Saunderson. Handsome Copy of the 1576 Tottel Edition of Magna Carta Owned by a Woman [Magna Carta]. Magna Charta, Cum Statutis, Tum Antiquis, Tum Recentibus, Maximopere, Animo Tenendis Nunc Demum ad Unum, Tipis Aedita, Per Richardum Tottell. Anno Domini 1576. [Imprinted at London in Fleetestrete Within Temple Barre at the Signe of the Hand and Starre, By Richard Tottell, The 8. Day of Marche, 1576]. [viii], 247 ff. Octavo (4-1/2" x 2-3/4"). Period-style calf, raised bands and gilt title and ornaments to spine, endpapers renewed. Some toning to text, margins trimmed close with loss of a few letters on outer margin of leaf A1 (fol. 1), minor dampstaining in a few places. Contemporary ownership signatures of Jane Saunderson to title page and rear endleaf, brief annotations in a tiny hand to a few pages. An appealing copy. $7,500. * Text in Latin, English and Law-French. With two tables of statutes, one alphabetical. An early and uncommon edition of the Magna Carta printed here with corrections and additions from earlier editions, up to the 14th year of the reign of Elizabeth I. It includes the Carta de Foresta of Henry III, the Statutes of Merton and Marlebridge and additional information useful to "studentes of the lawe" and "practisers of the same." A valuable window on English society in the sixteenth century, the statutes deal with women, wills, leases, forcible entry, "Fraudulent Deedes" and many other topics. In 1553 Tottel was granted an exclusive seven-year patent to print all "duly authorized books on the common law" (Dugdale). His patent was renewed several times over the following forty years. During that time he became one of the most important legal publishers of the sixteenth century. Dugdale, Origines Juridicales 59-60. Beale, A Bibliography of Early English Law Books S19. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. ff. [iv], 76. A⁴ ²B-K⁸ ²L⁴ Black letter, some Roman and Italic. Title within woodcut border, woodcut historiated initials, "The Law is the life of the common wealth" in an early hand on verso of title. Title a little dusty, final 4 ff. loose and a little dogeared, occasional minor foxing to margins, occasional mark or spot. A very good copy, crisp and clean with excellent margins, disbound and wrapped in an early black letter psalm leaf, loose in contemporary stiff vellum wallet with cuts for cords, a little soiled, small tears at head and tail of spine. Rare first edition of the 'Secunda Pars Veterum Stautorum', a collection of early statutes, often found with a first part, the Magna Carta, though issued and saleable and often reprinted separately. It contains many important early statutes such as the 'Statuta Valliae', which provided the constitutional basis for the government of the Principality of Wales from 1284, superseded only three years after this printing in 1535 when Henry VIII made Wales unequivocally part of the "realm of England". "The small edition of the 'Antiqua Statuta', first printed by Pynson in 1508, and afterwards frequently reprinted, contains Magna Charta, Charta de Foresta, the Statues of Merton, Marlbridge, Westminster, 1 and 2, and other statutes previous to 1 Edw. III. in Latin and French respectively. These are the earliest printed copies now know of those statutes. In 1531 Berthelet printed an edition of the 'Antiqua Statuta', similar to the editions by Pynson, with some additions. In 1532 Berthelet also printed a collection of the statutes previous to 1 Edw. III. not included in the 'Antiqua Statuta'. This collection he intituled 'Secunda Pars Veterum Statutorum', and it is always so distinguished. It was frequently reprinted. The statutes contained in it are in French and Latin respectively. Neither in the 'Antiqua Statuta' or in the 'Secunda Pars Veterum Statutorum', were the contents arranged with any chronological accuracy. In the Antiqua Statuta the Two Charters, and the Statutes of Merton, and Marlbridge, and Westminster 1 and 2, are placed first, and the other matters follow in a very confused manner. No better order is preserved in the 'Secunda Pars'. Charles Purton Cooper 'An Account of the Most Important Public Records of Great Britain.' The binding is an interesting and extremely rare survival; the block is wrapped in an early printed leaf which it seems from the same work as the leaf used for the stubs within the book, suggesting that the leaf was originally intended for use in the binding as pastedowns. The Vellum wallet cover has cuts in place for the binding cords also suggesting that the book was being prepared for a binding that was never completed. It has remained in such an unfinished state probably since the sixteenth century. An exceptionally rare and important first edition of these early statutes. ESTC S101049. STC 9271. Beale, J.H. 470 x 375 mm. (18 1/2 x 14 1/4")."). [16] leaves: title page, dedication leaf, 11 text leaves (Magna Carta), title page for Conventio, and two leaves of its text. Printed on recto only. Two separately printed parts in one volume. SPECTACULAR PUBLISHER'S PURPLE MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, covers with elaborate all-over design in gilt and blind, incorporating large Gothic "rose windows" at each corner, and rectangular panels surrounding a central cross panel, all of these sémé with various tools in a Gothic motif, raised bands, spine compartments tooled like narrow Gothic windows, gilt tooling to the edges of the thick boards, wide inner dentelles elaborately framed in gilt and blind, the widest frame diapered with Gothic trellis-work, scarlet watered silk pastedowns and endleaves edged with gilt tooling, gilt edges, original wide bookmark of gilt thread and brocade (very small areas at corners and head and tail of joints worked on by very expert hands). PRINTED IN GOLD, WITH HAND-COLORED AND ILLUMINATED ILLUSTRATIONS, the title page hand-painted and treated to give an "antique parchment" effect (including darkened margins), and the text with frames resembling the entrance to a Gothic cathedral, with hand-colored knights bearing the arms of the barons who signed the Charter posed within the niches that would, at a church, contain saints. Front flyleaf with a tipped-on handwritten letter dated 18 October 1817 and signed by the Earl of Guildford presenting this workâ""the number of which is limited"â" to diplomat and author Philip James Green. âHalf a dozen negligible abrasions (perhaps from insect activity) to lower board, but the binding essentially unworn and brilliant with gilt. Title leaf curling somewhat (perhaps to mimic one of the characteristics of parchment?), isolated faint thumbing, but A VERY FINE SPECIMEN--very clean, fresh, and bright internally, the gold text glittering and the decorations richly colored. This is an intriguing presentation copy of what Lowndes proclaims "the most magnificent of all editions of Magna Carta." It is one of the copies printed on card, with additional hand-painted "antiquing" to the title page that gives the appearance of old vellum, and it was bound by Whittaker's workshop in the elaborate morocco that appeared on some of the deluxe copies printed on satin or vellum. It also contains the supplementary "Conventio," printed in 1817 and often not added to the vellum copies. Noted for his ingenious ability to produce near-indetectable facsimiles of leaves printed by William Caxton and other incunabular presses, the typographer, printer, binder, and bookseller John Whittaker amazed the bibliophilic community by developing a process for printing text in gold. The Magna Carta was his first such undertaking; in 1816, he issued copies printed on thick drawing paper, vellum, or satin, with hand-painted embellishments. Dibdin notes that Whittaker was offered a premium from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in recognition of his innovation, but refused it as it was conditional on his "making the process known" to the public. This was a wise move in Dibdin's eyes, as Whittaker understood "the importance of keeping it secret." The hand-colored illustrations for the work were done by watercolor painter John Harris Sr. (1767-1832) and his son, John Jr. (1791-1873); the latter in 1820 went to work for the British Museum, where he specialized in producing remarkable facsimiles of missing leaves from antiquarian books--a skill he likely acquired while in Whittaker's employ. According to Dibdin and Lowndes, the coats of arms were designed under the supervision of herald Thomas Willement (1786-1871). This copy was presented to diplomat Philip James Greene, author of "Sketches of War in Greece" (1827), by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827), a colonial administrator who had served as the first British governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). A noted bibliophile with an impressive library, Guilford himself had an ultra-deluxe copy of this work on vellum with an added portrait of King John, in a blue morocco binding and case (lot 920 in his sale by Mr. Evans, 12-17 January 1829). No doubt Whittaker was happy to create a special copy for such an important client to present to a friend. Although the present copy can clearly be seen as less desirable than those printed on vellum, its very striking binding and the fuller text including the Conventio material provide significant compensatory features.
