In den Warenkorb4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. A long letter of eighty-seven lines, in a neat close hand. Signed 'Edward S Byam'. The recipient is not identified. Begins: 'My dear Sir / I have received yours of 7th Instant enclosing proof Sheet of what you propose saying in your next number of the Herald & Genealogist on the Subject of my lately restored Monument, at Stamford, to the Memory of Francis Knollys and asking me, if, I think any thing need be said beyond what you have already said.' He praises the writing as 'admirably adapted to the purpose', before turning to an article sent to him by the editor of the Gentleman's Magazine. He discusses 'the Erection or Restoration of two instead of three family Monuments: for in the Summer of 1862 we restored the Monument at Luckham (Lucombe) Church Somerset to the Memory of the celebrated Dr Henry Byam which had gone to decay and had nearly become illegible'. In 1864 his brother 'erected a Monument to Edward Byam the Doctor's Brother and his & my own immediate Ancestor in the Church of Castle Lyons Ireland - and this Summer I have restored me to my maternal Ancestor Francis Knollys in the Church of Stanford Berks'. He returns to the 'admirably written' article in the Gentleman's Magazine, and then observes that, 'a hundred & more years ago a Monument to three of our Family Governor Edward Byam and his two Sons George and William (the latter my Grandfather) was ordered and paid for': the '£100 Sterling being either pocketed or misapplied'.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Printed orange cloth 28x12cm, lined with a printed form, folding down into 3 panels 10x12cm. Very good, cloth spotted, with the form coming away towards the bottom. The form, individually numbered Mad. (Madras) No. 042910, contains ms entries, signatures, and the official ink stamp of the Special Magistrate, Sivaganga. This certificate was issued for evacuees in India returning to Burma after the defeat of Japan in 1945. The Japanese invasion in 1942 had driven close to 500,000 people in Burma and Southeast Asia to flee along highly perilous routes to refuge in British India. The British evacuation operation was chaotic, worsened by Monsoon conditions, leading to many deaths, and preferential access to air and road routes for Europeans and Eurasian employees of the Burma Oil Company led to accusations of discrimination in the press. This example was issued to Mr S. Palani Peraiya Konar. The form states his father's name (Palani Konar), age and sex (42M), his address in India (Kallappur, Ramnad, Madras), identification marks (black moles on the nose and left cheek), port of embarkation (Madras), destination in Burma (Bazaar Street, Dedaye, Pyapon District), dependents (his nephew, P. Sinniah), pre-evacuation interests in Burma (he was a cook, possibly in the Fourteenth Army), and where enumerated in the Census (left blank). The final section is officially signed by V. Venkataswami, Magistrate, 3rd Class, Ramnad District, Madras, on 31.5.46, on behalf of the Special Magistrate, Sivaganga. This section also calls for the holder's photograph or signature or left thumb impression, with signature provided (another example seen includes a photo).
