The Social Structure of Values is one of the most revealing books of Dr. Radhakamal Mukerjee one of the foremost thinkers of our era. Karl Mannheim had remarked that prior to this book there was no systematic work on the sociology of values. The theory of values is considered to be the most important contribution of Professor Mukerjee who interprets society as an organisation and accumulation of values. The book is based on the lectures the learned scholar delivered at some of the most prestigious universities of the world Harvard Columbia Maryland Washington and London in the presence of the distinguished thinkers like Sorokin Zimmerman Mac Iver and Allport. Dr. Mukerjee in the present work has analysed sociology as a science and philosophy. He has articulated a sociological theory of values and traced their social origin and evolution. Dr. Mukerjee feels that the methodology of all social services is undergoing transformation with a view to give guidance to man for his life values and fulfilment. The dualism between facts and values individual and society egoism and altruism huminity and cosmos is now fading away. The unity of society and intrinsic values is being emphasized and possibilities of a natural integration of social sciences are gradually unfolding. Dr. Mukerjee has under lined values as essential features of the new outlook in sociology. He aims to achieve universal values and the unlimited society of mankind and cosmos. He believes that different individuals groups and institutions work for social interests in different ways but the issues of adjustment integration and balance is always fundamental. It can be achieved through the formation and assimilation of norms and ideals. 330 pp.

This is the second volume of Dr. Radhakamal Mukerjee's A History of Indian Civilization. The volume deals with the medieval and modern synthesis and comprises 25 chapters capsuled in 4 parts. The keynote of Dr. Mukerjee's treatment of Indian civilization is its synthetic capacity. The renaissances in the different epochs and reigns of Indian history have reinforced this spirit. The history of Indian civilization with special reference to renaissances is exceedingly relevant today. Some of these renaissances are the Mahayana Renaissance the Gupta Neo Brahmanical Renaissance the Post Gupta Puranic Renaissance the Great religious reformation led by Sankara (A.D. 788 828) the Tantrik renaissance the Pallava and the Chola renaissances the Bhakti and the Sufi Movements the renaissance in literature painting architecture and handicrafts under the Mughal Emperors and finally the 19 century cultural renaissance. Dr. Mukerjee considers Gandhiji as the supreme and shining example of democratic leadership in India. He stood for right rather than for might. His procedure of satyagraha was remarkably effective in Indian mass movements launched by him. Gandhi's new techniques have far deeper and more extensive applications in social and political transformations than are imagined in the present junction. 544 pp.

In this book Democracies of the East A Study in Comparative Politics observes that communalism in the east is not a new experiment but an old and established tradition in political pluralism. In its consonance with the natural and instinctive bases of group formation it resolves that unfortunate dualism between the state and the individual which had been the overgrowth of the mechanical state of the nineteenth century. In its ideal of the free choice of the individual in shaping the aims and policies of diverse autonomous groups local and functional to which he belongs it rescues democracy from its identification with political democracy which indeed is responsible for most of its failures in the west. It carries the state as it were on the wings of the Individual's desires and feelings to those humanistic ideals which the world associates with the east and which will more and more govern the politics of the future. 418 pp.
