Zo bezochten geleerden buitenlandse universiteiten en biblotheken, laafden kunstenaars zich in Italië aan de renaissancekunst en gingen pelgrims op bedevaart. vorsten trokken met hun entourage rond en in de betere kringen was het toen al gewoonte jongelieden ter voorbereiding op hun volwassenheid op een educatieve reis naar Frankrijk of Italië te sturen. Comfortabel waren de reisomstandigheden zelden. Onbegaanbare wegen, niet te vinden overnachtingsplaatsen, bedreigingen van velerlei aard, weinig bleef de reiziger bespaard.
