John Duncan Mackie CBE MC (18871978) was a distinguished Scottish historian who wrote a one-volume history of Scotland and several works on early modern Scotland. He was Professor of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow from 1930 to 1957. In 1957 he retired, and was appointed Historiographer Royal for Scotland. Bruce P. Lenman is Emeritus Professor of Modern History at the University of St. Andrews and an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee. Noel Geoffrey Parker FRHistS FBA (born 25 December 1943) is an English historian specializing in the history of Western Europe, Spain, and warfare during the early modern era. His best known book is The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 15001800. He holds his BA, MA, Ph.D., and LittD degrees from Cambridge University. Parker has taught at the University of Illinois, the University of St Andrews, and Yale University. He is currently the Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History at the Ohio State University.
