Mackey's lecture notes from Chicago and Oxford circulated in tattered xerox copies and his work on the application of group theory to quantum physics was ranked with Jauch, Dirac, and Barut. After studies with Marshall H. Stone, Mackey was able to study at the Institute of Advanced Study, where "he met many legendary figures, among them Albert Einstein, Oswald Veblen, and John von Neumann, as well as a host of young Ph.D.'s such as Paul Halmos, Warren Ambrose, Valentine Bargmann, Paul Erdös, and Shizuo Kakutani" (Doran, Ramsay).
