"Following the death of G.E.M. Skues on 9th August 1949, a series of fly-tying articles which had originally appeared in the Fishing Gazette were published under the title, Silk, Fur and Feather: The Trout-Fly Dresser's Year by "V.C"., the initials of Skues' pen name "Val Conson". The cloth- or rexine-bound first issue just gives the author as "V.C.". We have seen a copy of the first issue with a publisher's slip laid on to the title giving the true name of the author, "The name was originally suppressed at his special request as he feared its publication might be prejudicial to the publishers of his other book." This card-bound issue presumably came later as the front cover gives "G.E.M. Skues" as the author. .

Colour frontispiece plate of flies. Brown cloth, spine titled in gilt. Some foxing, particularly to half-title page. Spine ends rubbed. Good-plus used copy. Lacks dust-wrapper. If one had to name a single book which changed the course of fly-fishing, this would probably be it. Published in 1910 when the cult of the dry fly had reached a high point, Minor Tactics threw a sensational spanner in the works. Skues was 53, a successful London solicitor and avid fly-fisher with a razor-keen mind. He refused to follow Mr Halford into the straitjacket of 'Dry Fly Only' practice. Instead Skues demonstrated that upstream nymph fishing for chalk stream trout was based on an old method, as sporting, as demanding and as interesting (if not more so) than fishing dry. The arguments have been smouldering ever since. .
