Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. This book is hard-bound in red cloth with black stamping to the upper cover and gilt stamping to the spine. The covers show scuffing, soiling, edge-wear and rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. There is damp-staining to the covers, which affects the pages at the front and rear. The text-block shows separation near the center of the book. The contents are bright and legible, with a few illustrations. Good for reading or reference.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. David Waterston (1871-1942) was Bute Professor of Anatomy at the University of St Andrews from 1914 to 1942. In 1913, while Professor of Anatomy at King's College, London, he was the first authority to debunk the Piltdown Man hoax. 2pp, 12mo. Sixteen lines of text. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight ruckling and bleeding due to removal from mount. Signed 'Sholto Mackenzie' and addressed to 'Dear Professor Waterston'. With regard to his uncle the cardiologist Sir James Mackenzie (1853-1925), he thanks Waterston 'for sending the reprint of the article on my uncle's heart, which I am very pleased [?] to have. I read it in the British Heart Journal when it first came out, and was very interested. It is remarkable how his pathological findings fit in so well with what he observed in himself.' He hopes Waterston is 'not being too oried by these odd times'. For the past four years he had been working in the Ministry of Health, 'doing a lot of the cancer work, but that has, I fear, been a bit curtailed with this war'.

A nice piece of Oxford Union ephemera, with the three signatures - 'James Robertson-Justice.', 'Compton Mackenzie' and 'Michael Maclagan' - printed in a row on the otherwise blank reverse of the 25.5 x 20.5 cm leaf, which is aged and worn, with closed tears to extremities and a fold line. Printed beneath the text of the advertisement on the other side of the paper is an attractive illustration in imitation of infant drawing, printed in brown, red, green black and white on a pink ground. Mackenzie's letter is 1p., landscape 12mo. 16 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with a crease to one corner. He thanks MP for his 'encouraging letter' and discusses his own 'silly slip about the Faery Queen's entrance' in a radio broadcast: 'I was so much concerned with giving listeners the difference between the O.P. and the Prompt side that it became a question of physician heal thyself.' He continues: 'I wasn't sure of the year Mille Le Garde [sic] sang that song. Probably '97. Rose Dering was the Aladdin. She was second boy. Ted Young was the Widow Twankey. By the way in the pantomime in which Marie Lloyd was principal girl and sang Ta Ra Ra Boom de Ay, Vesta Tilley was the principal Boy, but I cannot remember the name of the pantomime.' He would like to get hold of copies of 'The Stage' for the 1880s and 1890s, and hopes that they 'may meet sometime. it would give me great pleasure.' An autograph postscript reads: 'I always enjoy your books very much'. Carbon copy of MP's reply: 1p., 8vo. Creased and aged. 18 lines. He gives chapter and verse (names, dates, venues) concerning the points raised by CM, concluding 'I hope we meet before long'.
