In den WarenkorbFirst edition in book form, deluxe issue, number 161 of an unstated limitation signed by the author after the preface and bound in half sheep. This copy is inscribed by an undetermined hand to Major D. W. Martin, a veteran of the Rebellion who participated in the march on Delhi, serving first under Major-General George Anson and then under Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Barnard. At Badli-ki-Serai, Martin was Orderly Officer to the Chief Engineer, and during the siege of Delhi he served as an assistant field engineer, earning the Mutiny Medal with the Delhi clasp. He retired from the 8th Foot in 1878 at the rank of brevet major. Sir Alfred Robert Davidson Mackenzie (1835-1921) entered the Bengal Army in 1854, rising to the rank of colonel by 1882. Mutiny Memoirs recounts his experiences both as a subaltern in the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry (when it mutinied at Meerut) and his leadership of the 8th Irregular Cavalry at Bareilly. It also covers the storming of Jhujjur (Jhajjar) and Lucknow. Ladendorf notes that the author "indulged in no looting and often regretted the necessary severity against the natives". Mackenzie's reminiscences were first printed in the Anglo-Indian periodical The Pioneer, for which Rudyard Kipling was assistant editor in the 1880s. The Pioneer Press published a second edition in 1892. The inscription to Martin is on the front free endpaper and dated November 1891. Bruce 4311; Ladendorf 321; Raugh 6574; Sorksy 693. Octavo. Publisher's red morocco-grain half sheep, bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, red diagonal-grain cloth sides, sides and corners ruled in blind, light orange coated endpapers, edges untrimmed. Sheep retouched, head of spine consolidated, boards lightly soiled: a very good copy.
