This book contains over 40 years of criticism, the changes and development in Gaelic scholarship during that period bringing fresh perceptions and interpretations. The essays vary in subject matter, from the folk songs of the 17th century to the parallels between the instigators of the Clearances and the fascists of Germany. Nice unread copy but poor quality paper a little browned. Signedes.

Sorley MacLean [Somhairle MacGill-Eain] (1911-1996) was a Scottish Gaelic poet, described by the Scottish Poetry Library as "one of the major Scottish poets of the modern era" because of his "mastery of his chosen medium and his engagement with the European poetic tradition and European politics". Nobel Prize Laureate Seamus Heaney credited MacLean with saving Scottish Gaelic poetry. Here are two letters, one dated 1991 and the other 1992, handwritten by Sorely Maclean, that refer to a poem entitled "Escallonia." Two handwritten copies of the poem are present, one in English and the other in Gaelic. The following is an extract from the first letter: ".I hope this is not too late. I could not get it typed, so I have "printed" the Gaelic and put the English version in longhand." In the second letter he writes that he has "sent the proofs this morning. There were a few more misprints, which I hope I have got all." The letters are in very good condition with a fold across the middle and the two versions of the poem have been stapled together with a little creasing to the corners and a crease across the middle. First edition. Presented with text in both Gaelic and English. Considered one of MacGill-Eain's masterpieces, Hallaig is a reflection upon the Highland Clearances, a tragic period in Scottish history when many communities were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands. Taking its name after a deserted village on the Isle of Raasay, part of the Inner Hebrides, this poem is a significant literary achievement, reflecting the beauty of the landscape and the sorrow of history. Heaney's nuanced and delicate translation is notable for its sensitivity to the original Gaelic tone and rhythm, with Heaney himself a profound poet deeply attuned to themes of place, history and language.
