In den WarenkorbHardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Sehr gut. XXI, 252 p. Lediglich der Schutzumschlag weist leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf, sonst sehr sauber und ohne Anstreichungen / only the dust jacket shows slight signs of usage, otherwise very clean and without markings. - Composed over a period of religious and political upheaval, Culverwell's Discourse played an important part in the controversies of the day and sheds light on the evolution of English rationalism in the seventeenth century. In the Discourse, Culverwell offers a critique of reason that attempts to preserve the attitudes of Calvinism while giving reason more authority than that tradition allowed. Culverwell's work offers a background against which John Locke's early Essays on the Law of Nature can be understood. Nathaniel Culverwell was born in 1619 in London and died in 1651. He was a student and later a fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where in 1646 he delivered the Discourse as a series of sermonlike lectures on the biblical text from Proverbs 20:27: "The understanding of a man is the Candle of the Lord." That metaphor embraces the theme of the Discourse, namely, that reason and faith are distinct lights, yet they are not opposed; they are complementary and harmonious. Culverwell expands on that theme by examining the teachi ngs of Christian humanism that concern the nature and limits of human reason and the related concepts of natural and divine law / CONTENTS Preface Foreword An Elegant and Learned Discourse of the Light of Nature Notes Textual Notes Index. 18. London, Hy. B. Frankland, Fine Art Photographer, Clapham Road 83, 1878, elephant in-folio, 55 x 41 cm , (4) nn pp ( titles ) + 1 leaf ( portrait ) + 28 thick lvs each with a mounted original photograph. Bound in black half morocco, gilt title on front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Raised gilt spine ( expertly rebacked ). Marbled end papers. Inscribed on the title page by the artist Andrew MacCallum to Robert Hoe Esq. . With the ex-libris of Robert Hoe tipped in on the first paste down. Binding with some small traces of use but on the whole a very fine copy with a stainless interior. The English landscape painter Andrew MacCallum ( 1821 - 1902 ) conceived this publication in memory of his deceased wife Susan Irlam whom had died in Antibes ( Southern France ) on the 24th of December 1875. The first photograph in the album is a portrait of his wife. The album consists of 28 large original photographs of his paintings, mounted on thick album leaves, with a printed caption underneath. The landscapes were made in Venice, Berchtensgraden, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa , Rome, Fontainbleau. Provenance. From the library of Robert Hoe (1839 - 1909), with a manuscript ex-dono from the artist and Hoe's ex-lbris. The library of Robert Hoe, first president of the Grolier Club, was auctioned in 1911-1912. Nearly half of the books were bought by Henry Huntingdon. Obviously a very rare publication. OCLC lists only one copy ( Mills College - Olin Library in Oakland CA. ).
