Karl Marx, Max Weber y Emile Durkheim dieron en su tiempo una gran importancia a los sistemas de enseñanza, pero lejos de considerarlos absolutamente autónomos, independientes, cerrados en si mismos, fueron conscientes de que la génesis y el funcionamiento de las instituciones educativas son inseparables de los modos de producción, de las cambiantes formas de organización del Estado, así como del modo de concebir y articular a la sociedad.
