Folio. Mit lithographiertem Titel, Widmung, Inhaltsverzeichnis und 30 lithographierten, kolorierten Tafeln von Völlinger nach Müller. Halblederband der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts mit goldgepr. Rückentitel. Äußerst seltene Folge mit prächtigen, sehr sorgfältig und kräftig kolorierten Darstellungen der Uniformen des hessisches Militärs. Abgebildet sind vom General-Lieutenant bis zum einfachen Soldat alle Truppenteile, ob beritten oder zu Fuß, oft vor reizvollen Hintergründen. Müller (1784-1835) war Autodidakt, wurde 1807 zum Hofmaler des Fürsten von Waldeck ernannt und leitete ab 1823 die grossherzogliche Gemäldegallerie in Darmstadt. Völlinger (1790-1846) war Maler und Lithograph und tätig in München und Karlsruhe.- Das Werk ist Ludwig I. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1753-1830) gewidmet.- Seit 1950 kein Exemplar im JAP.- Im Rand hin und wieder gering stockfleckig, Titel und Widmung etwas stärker betroffen. Deckweiß auf Tafel 19 oxidiert. Die auf Stege gezogenen Tafeln tragen recto einen winzigen Stempel, verso zwei weitere kleine Stempel (ehemaliges Exemplar der Bibliothek Nationale, ausgeschieden 1976). Fine and rare work on military costumes by Franz Hubert Müller (1784-1835) depicting the uniforms of military of all ranks in the Hessian army. The large costume plates are finely coloured by a contemporary hand, with rich, brilliant colours for the uniforms and subtle shades for the clouds and other background elements. With engraved dedication to Ludwig "Großherzog Von Hessen und bei Rhein". The plates show a Major General, a warrant officer of the Duke of Hessen, a general officer, engineers and figures from all divisions of the army: cavalry, artillery, infantry, military police, etc., standing or on horseback in a landscape, in the barracks or in a town. Müller was an artist, engraver and author of books on fine arts. In 1817, having been appointed director of an art gallery in Darmstadt, he opened an academy of fine arts. The plates were lithographed by Joseph Völlinger (1790-1846) who worked in München and Karlsruhe.With the bookplate of F.C. Koch on the pastedown. With the table of contents mounted on a blank leaf at the end of the work. Overall in good condition, with only a small marginal tear (restored) and an occasional minor spot.l Cat.
