It has been adapted into a number of dramatic works, including the famous opera of the same name by Georges Bizet. According to a letter Merimee wrote to the Countess of Montijo, Carmen was inspired by a story she told him on his visit to Spain in 1830. He said, "It was about that ruffian from Málaga who had killed his mistress, who consecrated herself exclusively to the public. . As I have been studying the Gypsies for some time, I have made my heroine a Gypsy.".

8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. With autograph address and traces of seal. Charming letter to the socialite Sophie Duvaucel, apologizing for missed appointments due to "a very bad sore throat" and a meeting with his friend Sutton Sharpe the younger, announcing to "court her" on Saturday, also asking for "a drawing by M. Fielding", probably the English painter Copley Fielding: "Il ne fallait rien moins qu'un mal de gorge très conséquent et qui menaçait de devenir une esquinancie, pour m'empêcher d'aller lundi présenter mes hommages à Mademoiselle Sophie. Mr Sharpe m'a empêché de la voir aujourd'hui, et demain je suis retenu toute la matinée. Samedi j'aurai l'honneur de lui faire ma cour, et je tacherai d'être assez aimable pour qu'elle veuille bien me prêter un dessin de Mr Fielding". - Sophie Duvaucel (1789-1867) was the stepdaughter of the famous anatomist Georges Cuvier. Today, she is best known for her published correspondence with Stendhal, a mutual friend of Merimée and Sutton Sharpe the younger (1797-1843), who was a barrister and the elder brother of the scholar Samuel Sharpe. - Traces of folds.
