Ihr Abschied von der orthodoxen Psychoanalyse hat dazu geführt, dass Trennendes zwischen den beiden Therapieschulen gegenüber Gemeinsamem überbetont wurde. Die Beiträge des Buches schlagen Brücken zwischen Gestalttherapie und Psychoanalyse unter historischen und aktuellen Perspektiven. Historisch betrachtet haben sich viele Formen der Psychotherapie aus der Psychoanalyse entwickelt - sei es in enger Verbindung mit ihr, sei es in deutlicher Abgrenzung. Das gilt in beiderlei Hinsicht sicherlich auch für die Gestalttherapie. Die bisweilen überbetonte Abgrenzung von Gestalttherapeuten gegenüber der Psychoanalyse wurde von manchen Psychoanalytikern mit Nichtbeachtung oder heftiger Kritik an der Gestalttherapie beantwortet.
