Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A ship sails east out of Greece with fifty heroes aboard. Everything after that goes wrong in ways nobody expected - least of all the man in command. Pelias, king of Iolcus, has been warned about a stranger with one sandal. When Jason walks into the city having lost a sandal in a river, Pelias sends him after the golden fleece - an errand meant to kill him. Jason gathers the best men in Greece, builds the Argo, and sails for a kingdom at the far end of the Black Sea. They lose Heracles almost immediately. A boy is pulled under a spring by a nymph who wants him. A king who can see the future is starved by harpies until the Argonauts drive them off. The ship threads the Clashing Rocks with a dove flying ahead of it and the stern-post shorn away behind. And at Colchis, where the fleece hangs guarded by a dragon that never sleeps, the whole expedition turns on a teenage girl who cannot sleep either - because she has fallen in love with the stranger who has come to rob her father. Medea Book Three of the Argonautica is where European literature learns to look inside a person. Apollonius follows Medea through a sleepless night, a dream she cannot admit to, a walk to a temple she has no honest reason to take, and a meeting in which neither party says what they mean. Nothing before it in Greek poetry attempts anything like it. Everything after - Virgil's Dido, and every torn heroine descended from her - is written in its shadow. Jason himself is the strangest hero in ancient epic. Apollonius calls him amechanos again and again: at a loss, without resource, helpless. He wins by being loved, by being helped, and by being willing to accept help. He is not Achilles, and he is not meant to be. About this edition Apollonius of Rhodes wrote in Alexandria in the third century BC, where he ran the greatest library in the world. He was writing epic three hundred years after Homer, for readers who had Homer by heart, and every line of the poem knows it. This is a new English translation, complete and unabridged, of all four books - made directly from the Greek text edited by George W. Mooney (1912). It is set as verse, one English line to each line of the Greek, with the traditional line numbers in the margin. That makes it a poem to read and a text to work from: any passage can be found, cited, and checked against the original. Most inexpensive editions of the Argonautica are prose, and most are more than a century old. The English aims at clarity without flattening. Apollonius is a difficult, allusive, deliberately learned poet, and the translation does not pretend otherwise - but it is written to be read straight through, by someone meeting Jason and Medea for the first time. THE LYCEUM PRESS publishes new translations of the classics from public-domain source texts, each one made from a named critical edition and identified as such.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What depends on you-and what never will Born into slavery in the Roman Empire, Epictetus became one of the most influential teachers of Stoic philosophy. His central lesson was uncompromising: freedom does not begin with power, wealth, reputation, or favorable circumstances. It begins with learning to distinguish what depends on us from what does not-and training our judgments, desires, and actions accordingly. The Enchiridion, or Handbook, was compiled by Epictetus's student Arrian as a concise guide to that discipline. Its fifty-three sections confront fear, anger, ambition, grief, insult, social pressure, loss, duty, and death. Brief enough to carry through life, yet severe enough to challenge it, the work asks readers not merely to admire philosophy, but to practice it.This Lyceum Press edition presents the Enchiridion as a contemporary English adaptation. The language has been recast for clarity and force while preserving the traditional section numbering, allowing readers to compare the text with other editions and historical commentaries. Editorial notes distinguish ancient social assumptions from modern interpretation rather than silently rewriting them. This edition includes: - A clear, contemporary adaptation of all fifty-three traditional sections- A foreword explaining the structure, history, and purpose of the Handbook- A biography of Epictetus and an introduction to Stoic philosophy- A note on the text, its sources, and the disputed athletic-training section- Profiles of major figures connected to the Greek and Roman Stoa- A glossary of essential Stoic terms, concepts, and metaphors- Carefully separated editorial notes wherever historical context mattersThe Enchiridion does not promise control over the world. It teaches something harder: how to govern your own judgments and choices when the world refuses to obey you.For readers of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, classical philosophy, or modern Stoicism, this volume offers a direct and practical encounter with one of antiquity's most demanding voices. The second volume in The Lyceum Press Roman Stoics collection and a natural companion to Meditations.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What was Socrates really like Plato made Socrates one of philosophy's most enduring voices. Xenophon remembered him differently: as a teacher encountered in streets, workshops, gymnasiums, homes, and public spaces-a man concerned not only with abstract questions, but with the practical demands of living well.In the Memorabilia, Xenophon answers the charges that led to Socrates' execution. He argues that Socrates neither rejected the gods nor corrupted the young. Instead, he encouraged those around him to cultivate self-control, sound judgment, loyalty, competence, and reverence. Through conversations with soldiers, politicians, craftsmen, householders, ambitious young men, and troubled friends, Socrates tests easy assumptions and asks what people must know before they can responsibly govern themselves or others.Across four books, these discussions examine friendship, education, leadership, justice, gratitude, household management, civic duty, wealth, pleasure, physical discipline, and the nature of virtue. The result is an intimate and often surprising portrait of philosophy practiced in ordinary life. This Lyceum Press edition presents a new English translation of all four books, preserving the work's 39 chapters and 608 numbered sections. The translation follows Walther Gilbert's 1888 Teubner Greek edition. Passages Gilbert marked as doubtful or interpolated remain present and visibly bracketed, allowing readers to encounter both Xenophon's testimony and the surviving text's genuine uncertainties. For readers of Plato, ancient history, ethics, political thought, or the classical world, the Memorabilia offers an essential second witness to Socrates-and a direct, accessible inquiry into what it means to become useful, trustworthy, and good. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At the edge of Alexander's conquered world, a fleet sailed into the unknown. In 325 BC, Alexander the Great ordered his admiral Nearchus to lead a fleet from the mouth of the Indus westward to Persia. The ships entered seas scarcely known to the Greeks, following an unfamiliar and often hostile coast through violent weather, hunger, dangerous shoals, and lands where even fresh water could not be taken for granted. The voyage became one of antiquity's most remarkable accounts of exploration and survival.Arrian's The Indica preserves that story. Written as a companion to his celebrated Anabasis of Alexander, it begins with the India encountered-and imagined-by the Greeks of Alexander's age. Drawing principally upon Nearchus and the ambassador Megasthenes, Arrian describes the great rivers of the subcontinent, its cities and peoples, its customs and social orders, and its elephants, tigers, pearls, cotton garments, strange fishes, and legendary gold-digging ants. The narrative then turns to Nearchus's expedition. From the Indus, the fleet passes through the country of the Fish-eaters, where houses are framed from whale bones and bread is made from dried fish; confronts squalls, surf, hunger, and seemingly endless desert shores; and finally reaches Carmania. There Nearchus-sunburned, emaciated, and almost unrecognizable-is reunited with Alexander in one of the most affecting scenes in the literature of the campaigns.Arrian composed The Indica in the Ionic dialect of Herodotus, deliberately invoking the earliest Greek traditions of history, geography, and travelers' tales. His work stands at the meeting point of eyewitness testimony and inherited wonder: skeptical without being dismissive, precise where evidence permits, and candid about the limits of what Greeks believed they knew. This complete new translation has been made from the Greek text edited by R. Hercher and A. Eberhard. It preserves all forty-three chapters in a deliberately clear but historically resonant English, retaining Arrian's distinctions between what Nearchus saw, what Megasthenes reported, and what the historian himself believed. This Lyceum Press edition also includes: - An original foreword introducing Arrian, his sources, and the historical setting- A list of the principal persons appearing in the work- A guide to ancient distances, measures, watches, and chronological reckonings- A textual note recording significant variant readings and editorial decisionsFor readers of Alexander the Great, ancient India, classical history, maritime exploration, and Greek literature, The Indica offers a vivid record of the moment when the known world opened onto a coast of marvels.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Discover the oldest story ever told-now in a powerful new translation that brings ancient Mesopotamia to vivid life. The Epic of Gilgamesh is humanity's first great work of literature, composed more than 4,000 years ago-centuries before Homer, before the Bible, before any written story you know. This is the tale that established the hero's journey, the quest for immortality, and the profound reckoning with what it means to be human and mortal.Gilgamesh is the mighty King of Uruk: two-thirds god, one-third man, blessed with superhuman strength and cursed with a restless heart. He is a tyrant whose arrogance knows no bounds-until the gods create Enkidu, a wild man born in the wilderness, to challenge him. Their legendary clash becomes an unbreakable friendship, and together they set out to achieve immortal fame by slaying Humbaba, the terrifying guardian of the sacred Cedar Forest. But when the gods demand a terrible price for their defiance, Gilgamesh loses the one person he has ever loved. Devastated and consumed by the fear of his own death, he abandons his throne and embarks on a desperate quest to find Utnapishtim, the sole survivor of the Great Flood, who holds the secret of eternal life. Why read The Epic of Gilgamesh today Because the questions Gilgamesh asks are eternal: What gives life meaning when death is inevitable How do we cope with the loss of those we love What legacy will outlast us This is the foundation upon which nearly all subsequent heroic literature rests-from Achilles to Odysseus, from King Arthur to Frodo Baggins. Every hero's journey begins here, in the dusty streets of ancient Uruk, with a king who sought to conquer death and learned instead what it means to be truly human. The Epic of Gilgamesh is more than an ancient artifact. It is a living testament to the enduring human struggle against chaos, mortality, and the inexorable passage of time. It is the story of friendship, grief, hubris, and the search for meaning-themes as relevant today as they were 4,000 years ago.Experience the epic that started it all.Based on the Standard Babylonian Version attributed to the ancient scribe Sîn-leqi-unninni (c. 13th-10th century BC). Perfect for readers of mythology, ancient history, classic literature, and anyone seeking to understand the foundations of storytelling itself. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ten thousand soldiers. A thousand miles from home. Every road out runs through enemy country. In 401 BC, ten thousand Greek mercenaries marched into the heart of the Persian Empire in the pay of a prince who lied to them about where they were going. By autumn, their employer was dead on a battlefield near Babylon. Their generals were lured to a parley and beheaded. And the survivors stood leaderless in the middle of the greatest empire on earth, surrounded, unpaid, and written off as dead men. What happened next became the most famous march in history. The Anabasis is the story of how they got home, told by the man who led them out: Xenophon, a thirty-year-old student of Socrates who joined the expedition as a civilian and ended it a general. It is the first great soldier's memoir ever written - a true story of battle, betrayal, mutiny, blizzard, and survival, climaxing in the single most famous cry in Greek literature, from the vanguard on a nameless mountain summit: 'The sea! The sea!'Seventy years later, Alexander the Great carried this book east as a field manual - and finished what the Ten Thousand started.A NEW TRANSLATION FOR MODERN READERSMost editions of the Anabasis are scholarly volumes or century-old translations. This Lyceum Press edition is a fresh, original translation into fast, clear modern English - because Xenophon was not a dusty classic when he wrote this. He was a soldier telling the greatest story of his life.Read it as the adventure it is: the death-scene of a prince who would be king; the midnight council where one man talks an army out of despair; the seven-day running battle through the mountains; the snow that buried an army alive; the Thracian warlord who paid his soldiers' wages in cattle and excuses.THIS EDITION INCLUDES: - A foreword on Xenophon, Socrates, the fall of Athens, and the world that sent ten thousand spears east- A map of the entire route - from Sardis to Babylon and home along the Black Sea- A brief introduction to each of the seven books- A roster of the principal figures, from Cyrus the Younger to the treacherous Tissaphernes- A glossary of terms: hoplites and peltasts, darics and satraps, omens and oaths- Clean, readable typography designed for the long marchBeloved by soldiers, stoics, historians, and anyone who has ever had to find a way home the hard way, the Anabasis has been read for twenty-four centuries and assigned at military academies to this day. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Alexander the Great crossed into Asia at the age of twenty-two with a kingdom behind him, the Persian Empire before him, and an ambition vast enough to redraw the known world. The Campaigns of Alexander is Arrian of Nicomedia's enduring account of the man who shattered the power of Persia and carried the Macedonian army from the Hellespont to the edge of India. Drawing chiefly upon the lost histories of Ptolemy and Aristobulus-men who accompanied Alexander on his expedition-Arrian created the most disciplined and influential surviving narrative of the conquest.Across all seven books, the campaign unfolds with extraordinary immediacy: the crossing into Asia; the battles of the Granicus, Issus, and Gaugamela; the sieges of Tyre and Gaza; the pursuit and death of Darius; the hard wars in Bactria and Sogdiana; the invasion of India; the army's refusal at the Hyphasis; the disastrous march through the Gedrosian desert; and Alexander's final days at Babylon.Yet this is more than a record of victories. Arrian shows the intelligence, speed, nerve, and relentless personal courage that made Alexander nearly unbeatable. He also preserves the darker transformation of the conqueror: the killing of Cleitus, the execution of Philotas, the murder of Parmenion, the adoption of Persian court customs, the demand for prostration, and the growing distance between the king and the Macedonians who had followed him across the world.Arrian admires Alexander without surrendering judgment. His history asks whether conquest can ever satisfy the appetite that drives it-and whether a man capable of mastering nations can master himself. This Lyceum Press edition presents all seven books in a new English translation from the Greek text of A. G. Roos. Clear, vigorous, and attentive to Arrian's moral and military precision, it restores one of antiquity's greatest histories to the force of a living narrative. For readers of ancient history, military strategy, classical literature, and the life of Alexander the Great, The Campaigns of Alexander remains indispensable: the fullest surviving account of an expedition that changed the world, and a lasting study of command, ambition, glory, and ruin.…
