Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Dennis Lyall (Cover painting) and Myles Sprinzen ( (illustrator). [12], 324 pages. Illustration. Map. Author information inside rear cover. Inscribed by the author on the title page. The inscription reads To Fred, Making us sailors sound good! James . Nelson 42 o 39" N 71 o 11' W. The cover has some wear and soiling and book has some minor page discoloration. This is a Pocket Books original publication. Fleeing the New England coast after foiling a British man-of-war's attempt to seize his cargo, merchant sea captain Isaac Biddlecomb finds himself in the middle of a brewing rebellion and at the mercy of a sadistic captain. James L. Nelson is an American historical nautical novelist. Nelson was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1962. He expressed an interest in boats from a young age, building a skipjack in ninth grade and a canoe in eleventh. In 1980, Nelson graduated from Lewiston High School. He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts for two years, and then transferred to UCLA, with the ambition of becoming a film director. Nelson found work aboard the Golden Hinde In 1992, Nelson completed his first novel, By Force of Arms. Nelson continues to write full-time, and has published over twenty-five books, both fiction and nonfiction. Nelson received the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction from the American Library Association in 2004 for his novel, Glory In The Name: A Novel of the Confederate Navy. He won the 2009 Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature for George Washington's Secret Navy. As the War of Independence begins in earnest, American merchant seamen prepare to strike the first blows. None strikes more deftly than Isaac Biddlecomb, captain of the Judea, whose smuggling activities are making a mockery of His Majesty's Royal Navy. Pursued by HMS Rose, he sacrifices the ship he loved to the depths, together with the fortune he stood to gain, rather than surrender. On the run from the enraged forces of King George, Biddlecomb disguises himself as a merchant seaman. He is reunited with Ezra Rumstick, a comrade and fierce rebel, as the revolution gathers momentum. On a brig bound for Jamaica and now serving as a lowly mate, Biddlecomb find that fate tests his mettle as he is captured by the enemy and faces a life of servitude under the deranged captain and sadistic crew of the HMS Icarus.
