The renowned authors, Simonetta Luz Afonso and Angela Delaforce, based their research on coeval documentation that was dispersed around the world, part of which has been reproduced in this volume. Through the interpretation and meticulous analysis of these sources, the research team, who worked on this project for three years, was able to reconstruct the original gardens and explore the significance of garden culture during the 18th and 19th centuries. In an appendix, the authors transcribe relevant documents for the historical and aesthetical analysis of the gardens and their constructions. Besides the illustrations included throughout the book that ease the investigation, the publication ends with contemporary black and white photographs by Nicolas Sapieha, showing the garden structures in the Palace of Queluz.
