In den WarenkorbFirst edition, rare. This is the official account of Lumsden's perilous 1857 mission to Kandahar, undertaken to ensure that subsidies paid by the government of India to the amir were used for the payment of troops employed to defend Afghanistan. We trace just one appearance on auction records and 11 locations among institutional… libraries. Born aboard an East India Company ship in the Bay of Bengal, Lumsden (1821-1896) is best known for the corps of guides that he raised from among the tough and resourceful tribes of the North-West Frontier - and his pioneering use of khaki as a uniform. He developed an intimate knowledge of the language and ways of local peoples, demonstrating his ability "both as an administrator and as a skilled frontier soldier during repeated skirmishes and punitive campaigns" (ODNB). Munawwar Khan remarks that Lumsden and his party "appear to have had little or no opportunity of seeing how the [Indian government] subsidy was spent" and that "even if it was a bribe rather than a subsidy, by that time [the outbreak of the Indian Rebellion] it was a bribe very well worth paying since it assisted Dost Mohammad [the amir] to maintain his resolve not to support the rebels in India or to invade the Punjab". Lumsden took the opportunity afforded to carry out a fact-finding mission, giving detail on the Afghan army, thumbnail sketches of the amir's sons and feudal nobility, revenue, taxation, populations, and foreign policy. The appendices include discussion of local topography, coverage of field sports and flora, trade, and a description of Kafiristan (now Nuristan) and a vocabulary of its language. It was printed by the Baptist Mission Press, the most sophisticated regional printing house. Provenance: Royal United Service Institution, with bookplate and deaccession stamp; presented in 1900 by Lieut.-Col. George Hambley Elliott (1848-1931), Bengal Staff Corps (his name misspelled Elliot on the bookplate). During the Second Afghan War, Elliott accompanied Lord Roberts on the march to Kandahar, was present at the action there, and mentioned in despatches. Not in Wilber. Munawwar Khan, "Anglo-Afghan Relations, 1798-1878, with particular reference to British Policy in Central Asia and on the North-West Frontier", doctoral thesis, University of Durham, January 1950. Quarto. With 2 folding maps ("The Road between Thull and Ghaznee" and "A Rough Sketch of Kaffiristan"), plan of the fort at Kelat-I-Ghilzie (incorporating an elevation of the south front) lithographed by Ramanath Das, his name given as Romonath Dass, all printed by H. M. Smith at the Surveyor General's Office, Calcutta, and in-text lithographic illustration at p. 65. Original deep purple bead-grain cloth, sometime rebacked with dark red buckram, covers with blind ornamental panels, gilt-lettered front cover. Ink stamp at head of front pastedown of Thacker & Co., Bombay. A few marks to covers, corners rubbed through, inner hinges cracked and a little messy but sound, closed tears to maps neatly repaired, pair of pinholes to title page, general light signs of handling: very good.
