He also published a number of books of his designs, which doubtless served to publicise his name. He was a practitioner of the picturesque after the manner of John Nash and Humphry Repton, working in a wide variety of architectural styles including the 'Grecian', the Tudor Gothic, and that of the cottage ornà e as well as the castellated. A very charming, but practical, pattern-book aimed at the country gentleman who wished to construct villas which looked like farms, and for genteel farmers who wanted their farms to look like v…illas. Lugar includes designs for cottages, farm houses and complete farm yards and detailed plans for dairies, dog kennels, hunting stables, piggeries, poultry yards and breweries. It was the last of these which was adapted by Robert and Helenus Scott in their design for a brew house (see Broadbent, The Australian Colonial House, p. 280), the drawing for which is held by the Mitchell Library. This is a nice, unsophisticated copy of this new edition - actually a reprint of the original edition of 1807, with a new title-page. . Some foxing and offsetting, but a very good, largely unopened; flyleaves cut away.
