Zustand: Very Good. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the protagonist of freedom for music, disentangled music from the control of the ruling class. In publishing his music and writing for the rising classes, Beethoven claimed freedom and expressed the emotions of the new rulers, the artists. The Eroica, Fidelio, and the piano works express the emotions of the new rulers -- the intense love, the need for companionship of people, the forces that conspired to defeat the artist, and the strength and superiority of the artist in overcoming the weaknesses. The letters of Beethoven are the principal nonmusical expression of his personality in its relationship with the world of his time.In what he called the dry letters of the alphabet, Beethoven depicted his fears, his loves, and his friendly relations: his fears of deafness and of corrupted texts by pirating printers; his loves, Bettina Brentano and Giulietta Guicciardi; and his friendly relations with Baron Zmeskall, Frau Nannette Streicher, and the music publishers Steiner and Company. He praises the poetry of Goethe and Schiller but condemns Goethe for his obeisance toward royalty. He solicits help during his perpetual trouble with his health and with his servants. He castigates publishers, sets prices for his works, and calculates letters of dedication. He expresses his love for his nephew, Carl, but documents the trouble that Carl was causing him by taking up his precious time. And although Beethoven liked to decorate the letters with musical openings and closings and an occasional song to the receiver, he increasingly signed his letters, In haste. The 457 letters collected here are the most important of the letters of the spirit that was to shape and move a century. Explanatory notes comment upon works, on persons mentioned, and on the puns of which Beethoven was fond. The letters chronicle his business, his needs, his humor and bitterness, and his philosophy. They will give many insights into Beethoven's methods, his influences, his moods, and the conditions under which the master worked.…

Zustand: Very Good. Completed in 1824, three years before the composer's death, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony occupies a special place at the summit of Classical literature -- the peak of Beethoven's orchestral output and, for generations of composers, the supreme model of extended symphonic form. The finale is in itself unique in the orchestral repertory of its time, bringing the power of poetry and song to the symphonic fabric: Beethoven's dramatic choral setting of Schiller's Ode and die Freude -- his Ode to Joy.The work is reproduced here from the authoritative Litolff edition and appears in full score with bar-numbered movements for easy reference. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.…

Zustand: Very Good. The expansive emotional expressions and monumental musical designs of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) brought the Romantic era in music to its climax. A remarkable figure who strove for the highest perfection in his works, Mahler created a rare union of musical and spiritual expression. The composer's nine symphonies (a tenth was left unfinished) feature unique melodic and tonal structures calling for vast orchestral resources. His Fifth Symphony, reproduced here from an authoritative edition, has enjoyed undiminished popularity for nearly a century. According to the New Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the Fifth illustrates the kind of fresh and convincing formal solutions Mahler found . when he confronted instead the challenges and disciplines of the purely instrumental symphony. In this work, moreover, the composer turned toward an orchestral sound embodying a more vivid string presence, as evidenced by the beautiful and well-known Adagietto movement. This profound and moving symphony is presented here in full score with bar-numbered movements. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.…

Zustand: Good. The five Beethoven piano concertos have long been staples of the pianist's repertoire and are perennial favorites of concert audiences. Here in one convenient volume are all five, reproduced directly from the authoritative Breitkopf and Hartel edition, including most of the composer's own cadenzas. These concertos reveal the steady development of Beethoven's mastery of pianistic and orchestral resources through his early and middle periods. The first two, No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15 (1795), and No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 (before 1793), reflect the youthful exuberance of Beethoven's earlier style. No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37 (1800), is one of the most successful embodiments of Beethoven's C Minor mood' (New Grove Dictionary) and No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 (1805-1806), is considered a milestone in concerto development. No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 (Emperor, 1809), clearly illustrates Beethoven's further innovations in concerto structure.Pianists, musicians, conductors, and students seeking to learn more about Beethoven's impact on musical history, and lovers of music in general, will appreciate having these concertos in one handy, inexpensive edition.…
