Ludwig Salvator, Archduke of Austria (1847-1915) was the grandson of Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany. He had to leave Tuscany with his family in 1859, and later in 1867, settled in Majoca where he devoted himself to his natural sciences and nautical interests. He was known as a champion for Majorca's wildlife, in an era when the term "conservation" meant nothing. He travelled extensively in the Mediterranean on his own yacht, and published numerous scientific and partly self-illustrated works. He wrote a book on insects at the age of 22 and also a nine-volume book Die Balearen (The Balearic Islands). It was of great importance to Ludwig Salvator to stimulate public interest for landscapes, which he thought were unjustifiably little known and rarely travelled to. His attention focused less on classical cultural centres, and more on small, undiscovered regions. #23950.

The Archduke's emotional contemplations of the breathtaking scenery of Northern Mallorca are fittingly entitled "Summer dreams by the sea". - Very rare, only a single library copy traceable online (in the Kantonsbibliothek Aargau, Switzerland). - Wrappers spotted and somewhat creased; spine rebacked. Written in Catalan, this is one of the rarest works of the scholarly Archduke Ludwig Salvator (1847-1915), who was an early champion of the Balearic islands and who restored the site in the 1870s. Only four copies in library catalogues (Austrian National Library, Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut Berlin, The Hague, Royal Library, Dombibliothek Freising). - Some foxing, mainly near beginning and end.
