Externally generally smart, with a little bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Internally, binding is a little tender and exposed in places. Contemporary printed wrappers, marked and a little worn but sound. Originally published in 1845 with a second edition in 1852. Only one copy noted of this third edition, the British Library dating it to 1880.

In the first letter, dated 3rd September 1860, the author entreats Warne to become a subscriber of the work. The second letter is dated exactly two months later, by which time Warne has evidently accepted his request (though curiously his name doesn't appear in the long list of subscriber's included to the rear of the preliminary leaves). Both Lower and Warne were fellows of the Society of Antiquaries and it is apparent that their interests overlapped, the second letter is less formal in tone and concludes with a promise to visit Warne when he is in his area and a request that he can correspond again on the subjects contained in the book.
