The jacket is clean, bright and fine other than the clip noted above. Overall a Near Fine book in Fine condition jacket.

(Without the fragile outer jacket and sealed flowers, but we are unsure if they were issued with the softcover edition.) A fine copy, the binding tight and square, with light bumping to the bottom of the spine, the contents clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, that is lightly faded to the spine and otherwise free from loss or tears. An account of Hugh Low's time in Sarawak, following a government posting to Labuan in 1848. During this time he discovered numerous new orchids and plants, which he documented, illustrated and collected specimens to be sent back to Kew. It provides great detail of the people including their physique, marriage, religion, music, language, festivals, dancing, daily life, fire, food, narcotics, agriculture, land tenure, domestic animals, head-hunting, human sacrifices and cannibalism.

Text: "Dear Sirs [solicitor?] | I enclose a cutting from a newspaper called 'Society' [perhaps London Society?] which appeared in the Edition of the 2nd Inst | As the greater part of the statements there made is inaccurate & calculated to give pain, I shall be v[er]y much obliged if you will kindly advise me ass to the steps which should be taken to [?] an ea[l]y contradiction to these misstatements. 1. With regard to the marriage referred to I am assured that this is not contemplated [inaccurate!] & that the reports are unauthorised. | 2. Lady Hennessy's mother was the daughter of MrW. This very rare was book written by Her Majesty's Commission- er in Borneao, Rajah of Sarawak, Governor of Labuh-an. It is the personal narrative of some 30 months residence and the West coast of Boreno. His object was to make a collection of plants and seeds, study the tribes of aborigines. Brooke saw more of these tribes than any other Englishman or Europ- ean who visited those shores. A valuable history of the flo- ra and fauna, ethnology of the people, the land & life style of the Dyaks & Kykans. Of monkeys, orang utan, panther, reptiles, domestic fowls & animals.
