Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2016. 1st paperback ed. XVIII,327p. Paperback. ?This volume has been long in the making, since it has its origin in a conference held in Nottingham in 2003, at which the reviewer was present. The result was worth the wait, as we now have a thoughtful introduction by the two editors and ten contributions over a broad range of subjects and perspectives, which nevertheless cover enough common ground to provide reasonable cohesion for the reader. The main aim is to present ?a visual perspective on Greek and Latin epic?; the topics range from Homer to modern opera and film. (?) Lovatt?s part of the introduction summaries both the different occasions at which we may spot the visual in epic narrative, and the specifies of the epic genre. (?) Her survey (?) makes very instructive reading. Vout, too, starts from Homer, and considers the question whether the visual arts in the course of the tradition developed a specific practice to ?capture the grandeur of epic vision? The aim of the volume then, is to throw some light on the hypertextual character of any reaction to the Homeric poems, be they textual or visual, thereby ?probing and reassessing the workings of the genre? (CHRISTIANE REITZ in Mnemosyne, p.704).

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Umschlag leicht bestoßen, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / slightly rubbed otherwise perfect condition - Epic games are more than just an interlude; they reflect the realities of epic: heroism, power and war. This first major study of the athletic games in Statius Thebaid Book 6 uses them to produce a new reading of the poem as a whole. It explores each event in Statius games, discussing intertextual manoeuvres, historical context and poetic positioning, developing a theme from each: audience power, cosmic disruption, national identity, masculinity and the body, games and war, kingship and narrative control. This book uses a close reading of one part of one text to range over ancient literature. It casts light on the tradition of games in ancient epic as a whole, examining the works of Homer, Virgil, Apollonius, Ovid and Lucan. It is essential reading for the student of Statius and of ancient epic, and should also appeal to historians of Roman society with an interest in sport and spectacle. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Few classical stories are as exciting as that of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The legend of the boy, who discovers a new identity as son of a usurped king and leads a crew of demi-gods and famous heroes, has resonated through the ages, rumbling like the clashing rocks, which almost pulverised the Argo. The myth and its reception inspires endless engagements: while it tells of a quest to the ends of the earth, of the tyrants Pelias and Aetes, of dragons' teeth, of the loss of Hylas (beloved of Hercules) stolen away by nymphs, and of Jason's seduction of the powerful witch Medea (later betrayed for a more useful princess), it speaks to us of more: of gender and sexuality; of heroism and lost integrity; of powerful gods and terrifying monsters; of identity and otherness; of exploration and exploitation. The Argonauts are emblems of collective heroism, yet also of the emptiness of glory. From Pindar to J. W. Waterhouse, Apollonius of Rhodes to Ray Harryhausen, and Robert Graves to Mary Zimmerman, the Argonaut myth has produced later interpretations as rich, salty and complex as the ancient versions. Helen Lovatt here unravels, like untangled sea-kelp, the diverse strands of the narrative and its numerous and fascinating afterlives. Her book will prove both informative and endlessly entertaining to those who love classical literature and myth.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This wide-ranging, interdisciplinary collection explores different ways of visualising Greek and Roman epic from Homer to Statius, in both ancient and modern culture. The book presents new perspectives on Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, Valerius Flaccus and Statius, and covers the re-working of epic matter in tragedy, opera, film, late antique speeches of praise, story-boarding, sculpture and wall-painting. The chapters use a variety of methods to address the relationship between narrative and visuality, exploring how and why epic has inspired artists, authors and directors, and offering fresh visual interpretations of epic texts. Themes and issues discussed include: intermediality, ekphrasis and panegyric, illusion and deception, imagery and deferral, alienation and involvement, the multiplicity of possible visual responses to texts, three-dimensionality, miniaturisation, epic as cultural capital, and the specificity of genres, both literary and visual.
