William Withering FRS was an English botanist, geologist, chemist, physician and first systematic investigator of the bioactivity of digitalis. He trained as a physician and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Withering is best known for his treatise An Account of the Foxglove, and Some of Its Medical Uses (1785), which provided a detailed description of the use of foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) to treat dropsy (edema), a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in soft tissues. / Louis Harry Roddis was born in Cherokee County, Iowa. He was educated in Osakis, Minnesota and later received both a Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Upon completion of his medical degree, Roddis entered the United States Navy, in which he served for nearly 37 years and attained the rank of Captain. Roddis, Jr. who was the 15th President of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) and a Fellow of ANS, with his illustrated bookplate inside. Following his graduation, Roddis was assigned to sea duty for three years, and was in Pearl Harbour during the Japanese bombing on December 7, 1941, where he and others helped to rescue some of the crewman from the Oklahoma, ink name to the front free end paper 'Craig Nixon'. Very Good condition book in Good condition dust wrapper with small chips across the spine ends and corners, price clipped. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection.
