Lorsqu'il débarque sur la côte de Californie en 1859, la Ruée vers l'or - la grande, celle de 1848 - est déjà une légende. Dix ans plus tôt, ce territoire immense était un parfait désert, et San Francisco une bourgade mexicaine de quelques centaines d'âmes. En posant le pied sur le sol américain, Louis-Laurent Simonin, ingénieur natif de Marseille et passionné de prospection minière, découvre non seulement un autre monde mais une autre époque qui lui indique sans ambages de quoi sera fait demain. Onze ans après la mise au jour de la première pépite, San Francisco s'éclaire au gaz et compte quatre-vingt mille habitants ; les quais du port, étalés sur plusieurs kilomètres, accueillent des navires venus du monde entier ; et la région de Los Angeles produit déjà un champagne qui fait parler de lui. On imagine mal ce que fut ce changement de vitesse de l'histoire dont le sympathique Simonin nous rend ici témoins de la manière la plus vivante. Quatre millions d'immigrants maniant pic et pioche vivent désormais dans ce bout du monde dont le nom même était hier encore inconnu, y font régner la loi du lynch, bâtissent des villes en moins de temps qu'il n'en faut pour le dire, et rêvent d'applaudir aux entrechats de la belle Lola Montés qu'il leur arrive de croiser sur le chemin du saloon - car les femmes sont encore rares dans cette contrée où survivent d'abord ceux qui ont su se familiariser avec le maniement du pistolet-revolver tout juste inventé par le sieur Colt. Mais Louis-Laurent Simonin ne se contente pas d'évoquer les fastes et les grandeurs de la marche vers l'Ouest. Il en mesure la part d'ombre, de malentendu - évidente à ses yeux lorsqu'il se trouve être témoin de la pathétique rencontre de 1868, à Fort Laramie, entre les émissaires de Washington et les chefs des Craws révoltés. Ce monde dont il entrouvre la porte, il devine qu'il devra naître lui aussi dans le sang, et qu'il traîne déjà après lui son poids de regrets et de nostalgie.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Born in Marseilles, Louis Simonin (1830-86) became a leading mining engineer of his age. He travelled widely on government and private commissions, particularly around the United States, where he was held in very high esteem. His posthumous renown rests primarily on this substantial work on mining, first published in 1867. The book is divided into three parts, dealing with coal mining, metal mining, and the mining of precious stones. It covers metallurgy and mineralogy, the history of mining, and techniques, methods and equipment. Bringing the struggles of miners to life, and enhanced by numerous illustrations by some of the leading engravers of the day, the book is regarded as having inspired and informed Émile Zola, whose great novel Germinal (1885) depicts coal miners' lives during a strike. Simonin's work reached a wide readership in his native France, and this English translation appeared in 1869.
