Designed as an accessible introduction to the philosophy of mathematics for advanced undergraduates in mathematics or philosophy, this book surveys the central problems and proposed solutions in the field at a time when the subject was rapidly evolving but still lacking a suitable elementary textbook. Kattsoff begins with the relationship between philosophy and mathematics, then moves systematically through the major foundational questions: the nature of the objects of mathematics, competing definitions of number (Frege, Russell, Pasch, and the pure postulational approach), the extension of the number system, transfinite numbers, and the antinomies that threatened the foundations of the subject. He then examines in turn the three great foundational schools--logicism, Hilbert's formalism, and intuitionism--alongside Church's combinatory foundations and Mannoury's significs, before treating Gödel's incompleteness theorems, postulational methods, the structure of mathematical systems, and the ultimate question of the relationship between mathematics and reality. Written to gather scattered material into a coherent and historically ordered narrative, the book aims to show how these philosophical problems developed in the minds of their creators, and to illuminate their broader implications for philosophy in general.

Furthermore, it is written in the firm conviction that metaphysics is possible and meaningful metaphysical statements can and should be made. However, I felt it necessary to approach the perennial problems of metaphysics through the avenues of linguistic analysis. I have tried not only to infiltrate the position of the linguists but to show that a fifth column already existed there. Yet the objections to metaphysics needed to be met or at least some indication of how they could be met had to be shown. It is never enough to demonstrate that objections are un founded - some positive indications of a possible metaphysics had to be offered. This book, as a consequence, tries also to draw at least in broad outline, a metaphysical position that seems to me to be well-founded. In the present state of philoso phy in the United States especially, this is sufficient reason for publishing another book in philosophy. I want to express my appreciation to a number of people.
