Its most familiar expression is found in the Meditations (1641) and in Part I of The Principles 0/ Philosophy (1644). However nei…ther of these books provided a detailed discussion of dualism. The Meditations was primarily concerned with finding a foundation for reliable human knowledge, while the Principles attempted to provide an alternative metaphysical framework, in contrast with scholastic philosophy, within which natural philosophy or a scien tific explanation of natural phenomena could be developed. Thus neither book ex plicitly presents a Cartesian theory of the mind nor does either give a detailed account of how, if dualism were accepted, mind and body would interact. The task of articulating such a theory was left to two further works, only one of which was completed by Descartes, viz. the Treatise on Man (published posthumously in 1664). The Treatise began with the following sentence, describing the hypothetical human beings who were to be explained in that work: 'These human beings will be com posed, as we are, of a soul and a body; and, first of all, I must describe the body for you separately; then, also separately, the soul; and fmally I must show you how these two natures would have to be joined and united to constitute human beings resembling us.

Seconda edizione dopo la prima del 1666, di questo celeberrimo trattato del noto filosofo francese, Louis de La Forge (La Flèche, 1632 Saumur, 1666). Grande amico di Cartesio, La Forge fu un medico e filosofo francese, fra i massimi esponenti del movimento filosofico dell'occasionalismo, secondo la quale tutti gli atti dell'uomo, sia pratici che teorici, non sono che occasioni per l'intervento di Dio e che ispirata dal lavoro di Cartesio, vide fra i suoi più conosciuti rappresentanti, Arnold Geulincx e Nicholas Malebranche. L'opera qui presentata è la sua più famosa e contribuì in modo notevole alla propagazione delle teorie cartesiane e anche, in parte all'elaborazione della dottrina cartesiana, per le numerose discussioni filosofiche intercorse tra Cartesio e La Forge. In quest'opera, l'autore spiega la relazione dell'anima col corpo come opera della volontà divina e allo stesso modo, l'interazione tra i due sulla scorta della filosofia dell'amico Cartesio, esplicando anche il debito dell'amico verso il pensiero di Sant'Agostino ed i filosofi platonici. La Forge combatte strenuamente il materialismo e il dinamismo, dimostrando come Dio sia l'unica forza trainante e la causa universale di tutti i movimenti dell'universo. Christoph Wittich, alias Christophorus Wittichius (Brieg, Pologne actuelle, 1625-Leyde, 1687), théologien et mathématicien protestant, professeur à Herborn, Duisbourg, Nimègue et enfin Leyde, de 1671 à sa mort. Déjà de son vivant, il était considéré comme: «un pilier du parti cartésien» (Bayle); «Wittichius est, de tous les Protestans, l'un de ceux qui a le mieux su accorder les principes philosophiques de Descartes avec la théologie» (Chaudon, Nouveau Dictionnaire historique, IX, 1789, page 465). L'EDITION ORIGINALE posthume de ses «Notes sur les Méditations de Descartes» - notre ouvrage - fut publiée par les soins du médecin et théologien Salomon Van Til (Weesp, 1643-Leyde, 1713), pour lors pasteur et professeur à Dordrecht. Fils de médecin et médecin lui-même, ami de Descartes dont il adopta le système, Louis de la Forge (La Flèche, 1632-Saumur, 1666), publia en 1666 à Paris, chez Michel Bobin et Nicolas Legras, son maître-ouvrage cartésien: le «Traité de l'esprit de l'homme, de ses facultés, de ses fonctions et de son union avec le corps, d'après les principes de Descartes». Réédité à Amsterdam, chez Abraham Wolfgang, en 1670, il fut ensuite traduit en latin et publié dans la même ville, chez Daniel Elzevier, en 1669, à Brême, chez Johann Wessel, en 1673, et enfin à Amsterdam, chez Blaeu en 1688 [A Catalogue of Seventeenth Century Printed Books in the National Library of Medicine, (1989), pages 671-672, nos 6552-6553 (éditions françaises) et nos 6554-656 (traductions latines)].
