Rare et important ouvrage sur l'histoire de la photographie. Le 21 mai 1869 Blanquart-Evrard, lors d'une séance de la Société impériale des sciences, de l'agriculture et des arts de Lille, donna une conférence sur l'histoire de la photographie. "Son intervention comporte trois éléments essentiels qui sont : la réhabilitation de Nicéphore Niepce face à la gloire excessive de Daguerre ; la propre réhabilitation du conférencier malmené par W. H. F. Talbot ; et surtout un historique précis du développement des procédés de la photogravure." Publiée d'abord dans les Mémoires de la société, avec plusieurs illustrations, elle fut réimprimée en 1869 et 1870. Pour les illustrations, Blanquart-Evrard avait sollicité les différents inventeurs et obtenu d'eux des tirages de leurs anciennes photographies, des pierres lithographiques, des cuivres.et avait puisé dans ses propres archives, ainsi tous les exemplaires connus des Mémoires de Lille et des "tirés à part" de 1869 et 1870 sont différents. First printing of an importent paper in the history of photography in which " Blanquart-Evrard described, in 1849 (the paper offered), a process very similar to that of Niepce de Saint-Victor (his glass pictures or "Niepceotypes"), with minor changes, and called attention to the fact that the silver-iodized albumen could be used either moist or dry."(Eder p. 339)."In the field of photography we are indepted to Blanquart-Evrard for many improvements,in particular for having introduced the developing process of iodide bromide (or silver chloride) paper by gallic acid as a rapid printing process for producing large editions of silver prints."(Eder).

First edition. 8vo., l, 199 pp. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled paper over boards, rubbed along the edges. The foxing on the title page diminishes to mild as the text progresses; the last 80 pages show a faint dampstain along the lower edge, which increases towards the last leaves. Helmut Gernsheim's HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAHY, 1969, p. 187-189, notes that Blanquart-Évrard's advancements in printing marked the beginning of a new era of photography by introducing a "very considerable improvement of Talbot's calotype process." The calotype offered very contrasty images and were lacking in halftone sensibilities; Talbot's process brushed the silver nitrate onto the paper, where Blanquart-Évrard floated the paper in the silver solution, which provided a surface impregnated with silver nitrate and therefore, much more light sensitive and able to more fully record gradations in tonality. In this 1851 publication, he provided a procedural for the preparation of glass plate negatives with albumen, and subsequently, he introduced albumen paper for positive prints which revolutionized the production and clarity of the paper print. A rare and important manual which covers all the early paper processes. Roosens and Salu No. 925. First edition. 4to., Original printed front wrapper, 2 blanks, half-title, title, 61 pp., 14 leaves of plates with tissue guards, rear printed wrapper. Newly bound in half navy morocco and marbled paper over boards, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands and gilt titling, rules and simple decorative devises. There are two rubbed spot on the spine. A fine and bright copy. Additionally, this copy is signed and inscribed by Blanquard-Evrard: "a M. Poitevin, hommage affectuer", making this an exceptional association copy. Louis Désire Blanquart-Évrard's 'Imprimerie Photographique' opened in 1851 in Loos-lès-Lille. This facility was the first of its kind in France, with his production higher than that of Talbot in England. Through his advances on the calotype process and the albumen print, he was an active publisher of books, albums and portfolios. However, his original estimate of the costs involved in operation fell well short, and by 1855 he closed his factory. A partnership with Thomas Sutton in Jersey began in September of 1855, and closed in 1857. LA PHOTOGRAPHIE, SES ORIGINES, SES PROGRÈS, SES TRANSFORMATIONS, is regarded as his enduring work, an accurate history of the first three decades of photography, illustrated with contemporary examples. "Seminal discussion of photomechanical printing and photographic illustration . the text of this treatise was the earliest to explore the importance that these new processes would eventually have in printing and publishing. Blanquart-Evrard clearly understood that the ink-based image would eventually completely replace the silver based print in publishing."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 36. The original mounted plates include: Blanquard-Évrard's 1852 printing of a Maxime Du Camp photograph from Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie; photo-lithographs by Zurcher; a heliogravure by Baldus; carbon prints by Ernest Edwards and Alphonse Braun, et al. There are three different editions with this title; one is of a smaller format, and one was issued in 1870 for presentation and has additional plates. Most copies of this quarto edition of 1869 have fourteen plates. The presentation of this copy to Alphonse Louis Poitevin is significant; Poitevin is responsible for the basic principles of photolithography, carbon printing, and collotype printing. Exceedingly rare, with WorldCat locating only two copies of this editions: Rijkmuseum, and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Roosens and Salu No. 928.

Housed in a newly-made morocco and cloth clamshell box. Blanquart-Evrard was a prolific inventor of photographic process and a notable publisher of outstanding photographic works. "In 1863, he published an important treatise, Intervention de l'art dans la photographie, in which he describes the negative as a raw material begging to be interpreted by the photographer, modulating shadows and highlights, in order to obtain a relevant and valid artwork. Such a conception predated the pictorialist aesthetic." Pierre-Lin Renié, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, p. 168. Extracted from Mémories de la Société Impériale des Sciences, de l'Agriculture et des Arts de Lille, 1863, this 1864 publication is the first separate edition. The photographic frontispiece was made by F. [Frëdëric] Pierson.
