Er wird immer wieder von Origenes in ähnlicher Weise beschrieben. Macht einer durch Forschen in der Schrift Fortschritte und kommt er durch intensive Studien weiter, dann kann er, unterstützt durch die Gnade Gottes, erleuchtet in seinem Verständnis, trotzdem nie zur vollkommenen Erkenntnis des Untersuchten gelangen. Nicht jeder geschaffene Geist kann eben alles fassen. Wenn er etwas von dem gefunden hat, was er sucht, sieht er wieder etwas Neues, das zu suchen ist. Und ist er auch dahin gelangt, erblickt er wieder vieles andere, was zu untersuchen ist. Schöner kann wissenschaftliches Fragen und das Suchen nach (spirituellen Werten) gar nicht beschrieben werden. Deutlich spricht hier der Theologe von der Unabschließbarkeit seiner Aufgabe. Bündig und knapp kann es heißen: 'Wie ist der Name der Weisheit? Jesus!' Die Erkenntnis ist also kein abgeschlossener Besitz, erkennen heißt, immer unterwegs sein. Solange die Seele im Haus dieses Körpers ist, kann sie 'die nackte und offene Weisheit Gottes' nicht fassen, nur in gewissen Bildern, Indizien und Exempeln erahnen. Das sind geistige, unsichtbare und immaterielle. Immer aber bleibt es bei dem Satz, dass alles gebunden ist an den Sohn Gottes. Von der Gnosis des Sohnes steigt man auf zu der des Vaters. Anders kann man den Vater nicht sehen, als wenn man den Sohn innerlich in sich aufnimmt.
