Erstausgabe
Campbell, John Lord. Shakespeare's Legal Acquirements Considered. London: John Murray, 1859. vi, 117, [32] pp. Ex-library, with property stamps, bookplate on front pastedown. Publisher's maroon cloth boards rebacked preserving original spine. $20. * First edition. Originally composed as a letter to J. Payne Collier, Campbell analyzes legal allusions in a number of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets, as well as providing commentary on the text of Shakespeare's will. Lord Macauley apparently was persuaded by Campbell's work that Shakespeare had once labored in an attorney's office, but this contention is considered very doubtful by many. Holdsworth 15: 415.

Docketted: 'Honeywell coach | to be attended the beginning of May - 1846'. He writes that the trustees and executors of Honeywell's estate are handing in 'the remainder of their account for work done since the delivery of the last account to May 20th 1840, in which they have not included the amount of Interest due on purchase of the Job Chariot'. They wish for speedy payment, 'in consequence of law proceedings being instituted by the Ex[ecut]or of another branch of the family', and offer to give up the interest, 'otherwise they will be compel'd to make good their claim for the whole amount which will be return'd to the Court of Chancery, where it will be out of their power to remit any portion thereof'.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged grey paper. He notes an advertisement for Campbell's 'Lives of the Chief Justices' in that morning's Athenaeum. 'Had I been earlier aware of the preparation of the work it would have afforded me much pleasure in offering for your Lordships acceptance a Copy of the probate Copy Will of the Lord Chief Justice Fitzjames which I have in my collection of M.S.S. &c.' The will is very long and contains 'much curious matter'. Although it may be too late for any notice of the will in Campbell's book, 'yet a copy shall be very much at your Lordships service, should your Lordship desire to possess it'. A postscript reads 'I sometime ago sent a Copy to Mr Foss. [i.e. Edward Foss, author of the 'Judges of England']'.
