An attractive Gothic Revival item, tastefully printed in red and black. Printed on nine 13 x 9 cm panels, laid down on a cloth backing opening out to 39.5 x 28 cm; in original 14 x 10 cm printed card cover, with engraved title on front, within a gothic arch. In fair condition: aged and worn in worn and rubbed covers, with small white circular label on front board. Arranged, appropriately enough, in four columns headed: Name of Style; Reign A.D.; Illustrative Examples; Characteristics. The seven styles are given as: Saxon; Norman; Transition or Semi-Norman; Early English or Lancet; Decorated; Perpendicular Florid or Plantagenet; and Debased. Uncommon: the only copies on COPAC at the British Library, Bodleian and Rylands, with the only other copy of any other edition a copy of the fifth edition of 1844 at York Minster. According to Bedford's entry in the Oxford DNB, such youthful illustrations of 'the ecclesiastical architecture of London and York' as this item are thought to have 'brought him to the attention of the celebrated publishers and lithographers Day & Sons, whose innovative and costly production techniques placed them at the forefront of printing technology. Bedford's role at Day & Sons was to transfer the drawings and designs of artists intended as illustrations directly on to the lithographic stone in preparation for printing, a procedure that was both exacting and highly regarded.'.…

Designed to show off the firm's capabilities, and printed on one side in purple, green, light brown and gold, with fancy lettering within florally-decorated body and border, around a small central illustration of three men working a press. Printers' details in small letters at foot, reading 'F. Bentley & Co. Lth' and 'Shoe Lane, London.' The almanac on the reverse is a more restrained affair, stylishly printed in purple and gold. An attractive collection of chromolithographs, suited to display. The plates are all in good condition, laid down on the aged and sometimes damaged leaves of a small 4to (17 x 21 cm) album with good tight bevelled-edged binding in dark brown cloth, on which an embossed stylized pattern of foliage and two storks is printed in black with the word 'ALBUM' on the front cover and blind-stamped on the back cover. The album has an ornate title page, printed in red, with illustration of flowers, branches and a butterfly, together with the word 'Album' and publishers' details. The firm's binder's ticket ('M. W. & CO. / LONDON', 'No. 6192) is at the foot of the rear pastedown. The 36 chromolithographs, each printed on 6.25 x 10.5 cm pieces of white card, are arranged side-by-side in pairs on the rectos of 18 leaves. 22 of the cards are captioned in black copperplate: 1 Adiantum Fern; 1 Birch; 2 Elm; 1 Horn Beam; 8 Maple; 3 Oak; 1 Pear & Plum; 1 Raspberry; 1 Red Maple; 1 Sassafras; 1 Wood-bine; 1 Whortlebury. When opened out the card has the printing details and 'THE 35TH DINNER' on the otherwise blank reverse. Aged and worn. The outer covers of the card, opening out to 45 x 14 cm, carry a reversed photograph of a Miller & Richard chase, with form featuring the words 'DOUBLE CROWN CLUB'. 8vo, 2 pp. Good, though a little grubby on the reverse. Printed down the left hand margin of the recto is a long list headed 'Printers and Publishers of Illustrated Guides to'. Printed in large letters at the centre of the letterhead is 'Shropshire: Historical and Biographical', but there is no record of this title being published, or of any volume on Shropshire by Mates & Sons. From the context it appears that Lumley had a hand in Frederick John Snell's 'Devonshire, historical, descriptive, biographical', published by Mate & Sons in 1907. Lumley acknowledges receipt of the 'Memoir of the late Wm. Hardwicke Esq'. He was 'just on the point of leaving Exeter for Honiton' when it arrived, or would have replied sooner. He promises that the photographs of Turner and Sir Wyke Bayliss will be 'safely & duly returned'. His 'present address in Devonshire' is 'only of short duration untill [sic] all nobility, Members of Parliament &c have been interviewed'.…

Haghe features prominently in William Day's entry in the Oxford DNB, in which their firm's publication of Robert's 'Holy Land' (1842-49) is described as 'the most ambitious lithographic work ever published', for which 'Haghe, praised by Roberts for the faithful and artistic interpretation of his drawings, must bear most of the credit for the success of this publication'. He has great pleasure in lending 'a large water colour drawing the only one I have by me' for 'your conversatione', and will send it 'to the institution 25 great George Street before the 26th'. He also thanks him for putting his name 'in the free list at the adelphi and Haymarket theatres'. A nice piece of First World War ephemera, from the period of transition from volunteering to conscription. Newnes was a leading British publisher of the period, and the present item may have been inserted in one of its periodicals, which included 'The Strand Magazine', 'Women's Own' and 'John O'London's Weekly'. It is printed on a leaf of good quality cream 4to wove paper, and was intended for completion. In fair condition, lightly aged, with light wear and creasing to extremities. An elaborate and well-executed design, printed in black, red, yellow, green, blue, with border of oak leaves, lion carving at foot, and wood panelling at the head, on which are hung the armorial shields of the six allies, with Britain and France to the sides of a central sword. EVANS', dated from 'Islington, Feb. 11, 1812.', incorporating Smeaton's obituary from the Monthly Repository, December 1811. Following the eighteen pages of the sermon are two pages of advertisements for books by Evans and Kingsford. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight spotting to title-leaf. Kingsford begins his sermon with Smeaton's obituary from the Monthly Repository of December 1811. Engraved advertisement printed in dark blue, light blue and pink on both sides of 20 x 14 cm piece of unwatermarked wove paper. An amusing fake bank note or bond, designed to showcase the firm's competency. The paper stock and layout are entirely consistent with the firm's work. On one side, instead of a picture of a monarch or president, is the face of a rather imperious young woman (one of the directors' wives?), together with a design featuring the fasces and motto 'VIS UNITA FORTIOR'. The text on that side reads: 'Waterow & Sons Limited / London / Established 1810 / Telegrams / Imprimerie London / Manufacturers of / Bank Notes / Bonds / Stamps / and all other / High-Class Securities / Postage Stamp Printers and Contractors to the British Government.' On the other side is a Landseer-style lion, with a cruiser behind it sailing into the sunset, and the royal crest and the firm's details, with a description of its trade as 'Manufacturers of British, Colonial & Foreign Bank Notes, Bonds, Postage and Revenue Stamps, Share Certificates, Policies of Assurance, Circular Notes, Business Cards, Letters of Credit, Headings for Invoices, Letter and Note Papers, Chequs & Commercial Stationery, etc.' See Image.…

A frail survival, aged, worn and spotted, with one corner of last leaf dogeared. At foot of title-page: 'Any volume will be sent on receipt of Postal Order in advance.' Following the title-page are two pages with a history of 'The Chiswick Press. | Founded 1789.' Then a full-page advertisement for 'A Practical Treatise on the Art of Typography', with a full page containing 'Some Press Opinions'. Similar two-page advertisements follow for 'On the Making and Issuing of Books', 'Some Notes on Books and Printing', 'The Printers' Handbook', 'The Printers' Vocabulary' and 'Gesta Typographica'. Tinsley Brothers of 8 Catherine Street, Strand, were Ainsworth's publishers during this period. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Tinsley, | You are quite incorrigible.' Ainsworth complains that Tinsley has sent him a letter, 'delayed since Novr. 11th. last', and that he has 'been obliged to write a long letter of explanation and apology'. He hopes that 'the lady for the writer is a lady will be satisfied'. In a postscript he complains that the printers Savile & Edwards 'seem to have come to a stop. No proofs reach me.'.…

See Blades' obituary in The Times, 25 May 1953 ('Lord Ebbisham | A Notable Lord Mayor of London'). 5pp., 12mo. On five leaves attached to one another through punch holes to a corner. Addressed to 'My Lords and Gentlemen'. In his reply to the toast he wishes to say 'a few words on the subject upon which Lord Reading has just made such a magnificent speech', i.e. 'the World's Peace'. He speculates on what peace would have been 'dictated to us had the enemy won the war. Doubtless their peace terms are still pigeon-holed in the Foreign Office at Berlin. [] In any case, we should all have been put to much inconvenience. | Just picture to yourselves the horror with which the British printers would have received their orders to set up proclamations and other such-like disagreeable documents in the German type. Well luckily they are saved from the realization of such a nightmare and they can take comfort in the fact that a large staff of British printers are daily busily engaged in producing an excellent English newspaper in Cologne.' He discusses the need to 'repair the devastation of the past 4 ½ years', and the 'formidable task of national and inter-national reconstruction'. A passage on the League of Nations and 'the Worlds peace' is added in pencil, and the speech concludes: 'I am very pleased to see Mr. Hawker and Lieut-Commander Grieve as our guests here to-night, and I am sure that you will all join with me in extending to them both our heartiest congratulations on their very plucky attempt to fly the Atlantic, and on their safe return to England. [] Our very best wishes go to them for better luck next time.' Hawker and Grieve made the first attempt to cross the Atlantic by air. They left St. John's, Newfoundland, on 1 May 1919, and crash landed 1,100 miles of the coast.…

This is a document which would certainly repay investigation. No record of this firm of merchants has been discovered, or even of where they traded. Robison is a Scottish name, and there is an undated reference to a 'James Robison, merchant in Dumfries'; most Shuttleworth's hail from the north-east of England, and there is mention of a John Shuttleworth in Manchester in 1820. Other clues in the document suggest a London location: in 1793 Napper and Co. were listed as 'Dyers and Callico Printers, Old-street-square'; 'Clayton & Scott' were solicitors of Lincoln's Inn; and in 1810 a John Serrell dissolved his partnership with Charles Lickfold, 'as Carpenters and Builders, and Corn and Coal Dealers, at Camberwell in the County of Surrey'. On one side of a good piece of laid paper, 102 x 68 cm (i.e. three and a third feet by two). Folded six times into a 26 x 17 cm packet, on the front of which is written 'James Robinson Esqre.' In fair condition, with a number of closed tears along the folds (easily repairable, and with no loss of text whatever), and the reverse (the outside of the packet into which it is folded) rather grubby. The accountant William McRea has signed and dated the statement at bottom right. We at least know what the firm traded in: at bottom left are the details of the 'Merchandise': 'Coffee / Spice &c / Hops / Tea / Sugar'. The firm was clearly a substantial concern: the balance to 30 December 1804 was £17, 176 10s 4d. The rest of the document consists of the cash book, with the customary double-entry arrangement of credits and debits, and a list of the accounts of the drawers: William Bennett, James Bradley, Clayton & Scott, Henry Clarke, [Three pr. He was a "brilliant law student" there, and was "placed first in the law tripos of 1886" (Oxford DNB). The inscription "Westdean Lib: 1813", marking this as a volume from the library of what is now called West Dean House, near Chichester, West Sussex, once the grand home of naval officer and great collector of art and books Henry John Peachey, 3rd Baron Selsey (1787-1838). Photograph of Wordsworth (11 x 8 cm) presented as frontispiece, beneath which is written in pencil: 'The portrait can be vignetted if desired'. Facing the frontispiece is the title-page, with small circular photograph (4.5cm in diameter) of the grave of William and Dorothy Wordsworth, which has been scored through. Beneath the other photographs (all 11 x 8 cm) are captions in manuscript with quotations from Wordsworth, with page nos 86, 129 (cut away), 149, 169, 218, 243, 290, 338, 457, 571. It was popular among English and American practitioners into the early nineteenth century because its logical system of subdivisions within each title was a significant improvement over previous compendia. It was also considerably more comprehensive. As Marvin notes, it was "quite a law library in itself." Jefferson, who owned a copy of the fifth edition, saw it as the definitive statement of English law and the successor to the works of Bracton and Coke. The Abridgment was compiled and mostly edited by Bacon. The first volume was published in 1736 and new volumes were issued until the work was interrupted by Bacon's death. (His last entry was "Sheriff.") The rest of the work was edited by Sayer and Ruffhead. It went through some seven English and two American editions, the latter edited by Bird Wilson and John Bouvier. Modern three-quarter calf over buckram, blind fillets to calf edges, blind fillets and red and black lettering pieces to spines, endpapers renewed. Moderate rubbing to extremities, spines somewhat darkened, front joint of Volume 3 starting at foot. Light toning to interiors, occasional light foxing, light soiling and faint spotting in a few places, tiny recent ink shelfmark to upper outside corner of Volume 1 title page, small tear to gutter of last leaf of Volume 5 not affecting text. Brief early pencil and ink notes to a few leaves in each volume. A very good set. $2,500. * Third edition. Bacon's Abridgment is a digest of cases and treatises written by Gilbert. It was popular among English and American practitioners into the early nineteenth century because its logical system of subdivisions within each title was a significant improvement over previous compendia. It was also considerably more comprehensive. As Marvin notes, it was "quite a law library in itself." Jefferson, who owned a copy of the fifth edition, saw it as the definitive statement of English law, the successor to the works of Bracton and Coke. The Abridgment was compiled and mostly edited by Bacon. The first volume was published in 1736 and new volumes were issued until the work was interrupted by Bacon's death. (His last entry was "Sheriff.") The rest of the work was edited by Sayer and Ruffhead. It went through some seven English and two American editions, the latter edited by Bird Wilson and John Bouvier.
