Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. To understand the mind and its place in Nature is one of the great intellectual challenges of our time, a challenge that is both scientific and philosophical. How does cognition influence an animal's behaviour? What are its neural underpinnings? How is the inner life of a human being constituted? What are the neural underpinnings of the conscious condition? Embodiment and the Inner Life approaches each of these questions from a scientific standpoint. But it contends that, before we can make progress on them, we have to give up the habit of thinking metaphysically, a habit that creates a fog of philosophical confusion. From this post-reflective point of view, the book argues for an intimate relationship between cognition, sensorimotor embodiment, and the integrative character of the conscious condition. Drawing on insights from psychology, neuroscience, and dynamical systems, it proposes an empirical theory of this three-way relationship whose principles, not being tied to the contingencies of biology or physics, are applicable to the whole space of possible minds in which humans and other animals are included. Embodiment and the Inner Life is one of very few books that provides a properly joined-up theory of consciousness, and will be essential reading for all psychologists, philosophers, and neuroscientists with an interest in the enduring puzzle of consciousness. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. 5th or later Edition. The twelfth edition of this sought-after account of Pitcairn and island life - a lovely well-preserved copy in the original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt tiles and decorations. The twelfth edition is revised with a new preface, bringing the text up to date, and has four leaves of advertisements at the back of the book. An exciting account of the island of Pitcairn, with details on island life and descriptions of the scenery. With chapters on the bounty, the murder of John Norton, accounts of the mutiny, and much more. including a historical sketch of Norfolk Island and its condition in the nineteenth century. The first edition originally appeared in 1853. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and seventeen further full page engraved plates, one of which is a fold-out facsimile of John Adam's handwriting. Collated, complete. An excellent copy of this sought after travel work. ***For a book now 165 years old, this copy can be described as near fine, with very few discernible faults. Blind-decorated green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright, considering the book's age. The top edge of the page block is also gilt and still clean and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. No significant bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with clean pages - hardly any foxing and no creases or tears - just a couple of top corner tips turned. There is a contemporaneous presentation inscription, dated 1862, in fountain-pen on the yellow front free endpaper (please see scans). ***168mm x 112mm. 414 pages plus 4pp of adverts at the back of the book. ***'The first Edition of "Pitcairn; the Island, the People, and the Pastor.", appeared in the spring of 1853. Between that date and the present, about thirty thousand copies have been printed. The subject was one of a kind at once to command a large circulation of the work: and circumstances have continued to arise, in connexion with the Island, which have greatly tended to sustain the interest felt in the place and its inhabitants. The arrival of their pastor in England, his admission, whilst here, to holy orders, and his interview with the Queen and the Prince Consort, were pleasing and important occurrences, when viewed in reference to the original history of Pitcairn. Still more eventful days, however, were in store for the people. The provision made by the British Government for their transfer to Norfolk Island, and the further measures recently adopted for their benefit by Sir William Denison, the governor, have brought to our minds the progress and prospects of this remarkable community in a striking manner.' (Quote taken from the new Preface to the twelfth edition) ***'x.' (Quote taken from Wiki) ***A revised and enlarged twelfth edition of this beautiful little book, in near fine original condition. Very uncommon in this condition. Of interest to collectors of work concerning Pitcairn Island. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

In den WarenkorbR. J. L. Kingsford, in his history of the Publishers Association, describes Young as 'a bookseller of outstanding character and ability, a friend of Arnold Bennett, and the discoverer of the literary distinction of George Sturt'. 1p., 12mo. Neatly and closely written. Headed 'private', and addressed to 'Dear John'. Young is apparently following a dinner (of the Publishers Association) at which George Bernard Shaw was present, and the subject of the letter would appear to be an exhibition Wilson's firm has mounted of books by the London publisher John Murray. He asks him not to allow his 'remarks of Thursday to drill too deeply into your mind'. From Wilson's 'early note' he fears his remarks may have been taken too seriously. 'Knowing you so well and as you will believe with so considerable a liking, I thought you should be made aware of an outside impression which does exist though has not been expressed to me. It was a criticism of the publisher rather than of you. If you look at it from these outsiders point of view it resolves itself into propaganda for your firm.' From Young's own point of view 'such exhibitions can only do good to the Book trade and I am not minded to consider too personal a point of view. Now you may dismiss this matter from your mind If Murrays and subsequent shows would make it clear that the books exhibited are on sale at all reputable bookshops it might be "A Good Thing" as the author of "1066 and all that" says.' Young concludes: 'I wish I'd stayed another few minutes. - & seen G. B. S. I liked herself very much.' From the papers of John G. Wilson, for information regarding whom see his entry in the Oxford DNB.…

The Cornhill Magazine No. 16 (New Series) No. 454 October 1897
The Cornhill Magazine (1860-1975) was a monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal named after the street address of the founding publisher Smith, Elder & Co. at 65 Cornhill in London. In the 1860s, under editor William Makepeace Thackeray, the paper saw a large circulation, peaking at around 110,000. Due to emerging competitors, circulation fell to 20,000 by 1870. The following year, Leslie Stephen took over as editor. When Stephen left in 1882, circulation had further fallen to 12,000. The Cornhill was purchased by John Murray in 1912, and continued to publish issues until 1975.
