Abstract: The paper deals with modern condensing locomotives both of the reciprocating and turbine types. The authors emphasize that such locomotives have recently been built in order to attain one of two mutually incompatible objects, namely, either the achievement of a very high efficiency in temperate climates, or the building of locomotives which lose no water for hot, waterless countries. The first object is best attained by use of a turbine with high vacuum, while the second is most readily achieved with a reciprocating engine having no vacuum at all. The latter has the advantage over Diesel locomotives in that any kind of fuel can be used. Seit dem Erscheinen der ersten Sulzer-Diesellokomotive sind zwar schon 15 Jahre vergangen, aber als eine zeitgemäße Aufgabe der Eisenbahntechnik kann das Diesellokomotivproblem erst als seit fünf Jahren bestehend betrachtet werden. In dieser Zeit ist viel geschehen. Es sind mehrere Diesellokomotiven in Rußland,Deutschland, Italien und Amerika gebaut worden und werden im regelmäßigem Dienst verwendet. Es ist deshalb der Zeitpunkt gekommen, einige Schlüsse zu ziehen. Dies um so mehr, als bei der Lösung des Diesellokomotivproblems auf der Erde viel unnütze Doppelarbeit geleistet wird, deren Ursache hauptsächlich in der Unwissenheit darüber liegt, was in den verschiedenen Ländern von anderen bereits erreicht werden ist. Es wird viel Geld und Arbeit für die Erfindung bereitsvorhandener Erfindungen verwendet sowie zur Wiederholung der Fehler, die bereits an andern Stellen gemacht und erkannt worden sind. Die Hauptaufgabe des Verfassers besteht in der Verhütung dieser unwirtschaftlichen Arbeit. Der Verfasser war bestrebt, nach Möglichkeit objektiv zu bleiben and die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit den fremden Arbeiten wie seinen eigenen zu widmen. Dies ist jedoch ans dem Grunde nicht ganz gelungen, weil eine große Anzahl von Personen und Firmen die Erlaubnis zur Veröffentlichung dieser oder jener Angaben verweigerten.
