Unter dem Originaltitel "The romance of mountaineering" bereits 1935 in London erschienen, war eine Veröffentlichung der deutschen Übersetzung dieses alpinhistorischen Werkes erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg möglich. In der Einleitung äußert sich Irving folgendermaßen: "Zweierlei war meine Absicht: Einen Abriß der Geschichte des Bergsteigens zu schreiben, und die Rolle zu schildern, die der Mensch in den Bergen gespielt hat". Dabei verwendete der Autor auch Auszüge aus den Originalwerken.

Die Abschnitte "Volkscharakter im Spiegel der Berge", "Bergsteigen außerhalb der gewöhnlichen Jahreszeiten" und vor allem jene über das "Alleingehen" und über die "Einstellung zu den Bergen", gehören unbestreitbar zu dem Besten, was hierüber jemals geschrieben wurde.
