A jaunty missive. Lady Eastlake and her husband have separate entries in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 16mo. Eighteen lines. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Dear Mrs Ford' and signed 'Eliz Eastlake'. A 'kind friend in the country' is insisting on sending her 'early strawberries & grapes' and she asks Mrs Ford not to 'commit the extravagance of orderg any yourself, but trust to me to have the offering transferred to 123 Park Street'. She will be sending for the fruit at Euston Station around 2 o'clock on the Saturday, '& they shall be shortly after that with you'. She concludes: 'Don't thank me for eating them at yr home'.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB, and that of the recipient's husband, the judge Sir Edward Hall Alderson (1787-1857). 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium with thick mourning border. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Begins: 'Dear Lady Alderson / Fresh, & very heavy sorrow has befallen us, or I wd. sooner have answered yr ot of last Saturday. The death of Captn. de Wahl, a most distinguished [army?] officer - my sister's son - has engrossed all my thoughts.' She is enclosing 'a few specimens of the 'blue paper' which I have found so efficacious - If you put the corner of the paper to a candle it will immediately burn like 'touch paper'. She gives advice regarding the paper, whose smoke 'burnt [?] round the patie nt, gives great relief in asthma or bad cough'. After the valediction she gives 'the simple receipt', covering nineteen lines, in which the paper is named as 'lace paper'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, with slight discolouration from glue. Reads: 'Mr Eastlake presents his compliments to Mr. Mauld & begs to enclose a half sovereign for the young lady on whose behalf Mr. Mauld has applied to him. | 7. Fitzroy Square | Octr. 28. 1850.'.

Two pages, 12mo. On gray paper. Good, though lightly ruckled and aged. He thanks her for the 'information about the silk', and accepts her invitation. He had intended to call on her the day before, but was prevented by the weather. He 'consoled' himself 'by supposing that I should meet you at Mr Rogers's where I dined, but where you were not.' Comments that his correspondent's note 'is not in your handwriting, moreover it is written by an inexperienced secretary for she began "My dear Mr E" & then scratched out the my finding it was an innovation in the official form.' He has received a letter 'from the new Director [of the 'school of design'] who is to be in town on Friday. Mr Ker will think himself privileged to give you an account of the invitation of his new protege'.

1p., 12mo. Good, with the blank second leaf of the bifolium having slight staining from mount, and having laid down on it a newspaper cutting headed 'DEATH OF SIR C. EASTLAKE', docketd 'E & T Dec 26/65'. The note reads: 'Sir Chas Eastlake presents his compts. to Mr Whitaker & begs to inform him that Mr Millais' address is No. 7. Cromwell Place | Kensington. S.W. | 7. Fitzroy Sqr. (London) | Feby 5 1863.'.

4pp., 16mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on aged paper. She begins by explaining the reasons for her silence, and apologising if she has 'seemed neglectful': 'the truth is that I quitted Chester Squr on Monday, for Miss Squire's of Blackheath [.] I return to London to morrow mg, to spend a few days with Mr. Murray's [publisher] family in Albemarle St. & then think of takg the railroad to Derby [opened in 1844] to fulfil a long promised visit.' The letter continues with references to 'Mrs Reese Sr.' of Chester Square, 'dear Kath:' and 'dear Matty'. The letter concludes: 'May we have all reason to praise God's mercy in the complete restoration of our dearest Kitty's beloved husband. I do indeed share yr thankfulness in the happy prospect'.
