Having earned the bachelors' degree at Grove City College and the masters' degree and the doctor of philosophy degree at the University of Pittsburgh, he served at the dean/director level at two universities while also serving on the faculty teaching continuing education, undergraduate and graduate level courses.Upon graduation from college, Dr. Loch enrolled in Pittsburgh Theological Seminary to pursue ordination as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the PC (USA). However, during his first year in seminary, he opted to pursue a career in higher education and went on to enjoy a forty-two year career serving in positions in student affairs and in academic affairs.Upon retirement in 2005, after a forty-two year career at the dean and director levels at the University of Pittsburgh and Youngstown State University, Dr. Loch went 'back to the future.' He enrolled in the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary's online Commissioned Lay Pastor course of study to prepare to serve as a Commissioned Lay Pastor in Shenango Presbytery.Since 2007, Dr. Loch has served as the pastor of two congregations. He is currently serving as a Sunday Supply Pastor for churches in Shenango Presbytery and in Eastminster Presbytery.Throughout his career in higher education and in the ministry, Dr. Loch has served in leadership roles and on the board of directors at the local, national and international levels. As a part of his present day ministry, he serves as the Moderator of the Committee on Preparation for the Ministry for Shenango Presbytery and served on the seven person Nominating Committee to recruit, screen and recommend a candidate to serve as Executive Presbyter and Stated Clerk.Dr. Loch has traveled widely in the United States and in twenty foreign countries.This book is a compilation of thirty-one sermons preached in various churches that have been adapted and drawn together at the suggestion of members of those congregations and by friends to share his insights into steps that he and others have taken in their faith walk.

2pp., 12mo. 40 lines. Bifolium. Good, on aged paper. The reverse of the second leaf carries half of a red wax seal, as well as the address to 'James Loch Esqr | Bloomsbury Square'. The letter begins: 'My dear Loch | Some friends of mine from the Country are desirous of seeing Lord Stafford's & Lord Grosvenor's pictures some time next week; & they understand that the obtaining of Tickets is not a matter of course but that some little interest is necessary.' He asks for assistance 'with regard to Cleveland House [.] for Mrs Johnston & party (about 5 or 6 persons)'. He is going 'to the Cambridge Election' on the following day, and thinks that it will be 'very keenly contested'. On his return he hopes 'to attend the Council of the London University', when he hopes 'that Horner's business will be finally & satisfactorily settled'. He has heard 'nothing more about Silk Gowns', but 'Willy Brougham [.] persists in retaining his appointment and will not be scared into resignation, like Plunkett, by the Chancery Lawyers.' In the last paragraph he deprecates the news that 'Lord Exeter is to have one of the blue Ribbands, though he is no friend of Canning's, & indeed closely connected with the high Tory opposition'. This is, in his view, 'one among many instances of C's weakness, & entire dependence upon the higher power.' There is no mention of Loch in Lady Seymour's 'The "Pope" of Holland House, Selections from the Correspondence of John Whishaw and his Friends, 1813-1840' (1906), and the year 1827 is skirted over.

On three sides of a vellum bifolium supplied by the London law stationers Witherby & Co. Dimensions of leaf 39 x 26 cm. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. The document is a draft, with several emendations in pencil, including a lengthy addition in the margin of first page, and a shorter one on the second page. Laid out in customary style, within red rules. Docketed on fourth side: 'Dated 15th August 1914 | The Earl of Ducie and Others | to | The Earl of Ducie and Others | Red Cross Garden | Assignment'. With stamp of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, signed by Hugh de Bock Porter. The document is signed by eight individuals: the Earl of Ducie, Lancelot William Bennett, Charles Stewart Loch, Mary Lumsden, Helen Ironside, Janet Johnson, Thomas Slingsby Tanner, Cecil Antony Nussey, with each of the eight signatures accompanied by that of a different witness. Eight wafer seals in red wax, on a length of green ribbon. The document refers back to the original 999-year lease of 1888, with original lessees 'the said Earl of Ducie William Waldegrave Viscount Wolmer M.P. Herbert Bulkey Mackworth Praed Robert Hunter C.B. [i.e. Sir Robert Hunter (1844-1913)] Octavia Hill and the said Helen Ironside and the said Janet Johnson'. The document explains that as Hill and Hunter (both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust) have since died, 'the Assignors are desirous of vesting the said premises in the assignees'. Red Cross Garden was laid out in 1887 on the site of a burnt down paper factory and a derelict warehouse. With its ornamental pond, a bandstand, a covered play area for children, and colourful mosaics , the garden was the venue for the annual Southwark Flower Show, and other fetes and celebrations. The garden has recently been restored, and is now run by the Bankside Open Spaces Trust.
