very good dust-jacket, fresh attractive large white hardcover. LOBEL, MICHAEL. John Sloan: drawing on illustration. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2014, 1st printing number line ending with 1, ix, 229pp., . Dust-jacket design by Yve Ludwig. The American realist artist John Sloan (1871-1951) is best known for his portrayals of daily life in early 20th-century New York and as a member of The Eight and the Ashcan School, alongside peers like Robert Henri, Everett Shinn and George Luks. Sloan's artistic approach was shaped by his experience as a commercial illustrator, a type of work that inaugurated his professional career - at newspapers like the 'Philadelphia Press' and later for mass-market magazines - and which he pursued even after he turned his focus to painting. In this book, Michael Lobel explores the impact of Sloan's illustrating on his wider output, including his paintings, his drawings for the radical journal The Masses, and his response to the watershed 1913 Armory Show. Illuminating the interaction between art and popular culture, this book provides an important new framework for understanding the modern genre of illustration, and in so doing touches on major 20th-century currents, including the rise and expansion of the mass media and the visual legacy of European modernism. - CONTENTS: Newspaper illustration, technological change, and professional identity -- In dialogue -- The practical paintist -- Figuring the painter in the crowd -- Before the masses : painting, politics, and propaganda -- Modernism, illustrated : Sloan and Duchamp. Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 16,5 x 22,5 cm, 160 pages with 100 color illustrations - Sturtevant was a figure of outstanding significance for the art history of the second half of the 20th century. Research into her graphic oeuvre reveals that her early drawings from the 1960s are key to understanding the artist's radical conceptual work especially her drawings from 1965 and 1966, the so-called "composite drawings." Over the course of the past 50 years, Sturtevant has developed what is perhaps the most radical practice of her generation, determined by a rigorous and insistent conceptual approach. She was concerned with more than the mere reception of art; her aim was to change mental attitudes. She disconcerted and provoked the spectator and the art world in general to equal degrees by repeating original works by contemporary artists. Astonishingly quickly after the originals are made, she used them as source and catalyst, her intentions being to expand and develop our current notions of aesthetics, probe originality, and investigate the relation of origins to originality and open space for new thinking (Sturtevant).
