(Wiki) ***'AMBIT started in '59; there were various impulses behind it. I'd been interested in the writer John Middleton Murray, who was married to Katharine Mansfield. He had run a magazine from about 1910 onwards for two or three years called Rhythm that attracted writers like D.H. Lawrence, and Katharine Mansfield of course. What was striking about it - you could look at it in the V&A library - was that Murray, who really knew nothing about art, had met a Scottish artist called Ferguson who was sending over from Paris artwork by "young" artists like Picasso, Miro, etc. They looked quite startling in this 1910 magazine. And the idea, that Murray never developed, of trying to produce a magazine that had literary and visual material really working together, came to me out of that. But the other initiatives were more simple. There weren't many magazines about then because the possibility of what everybody can do now -- produce a magazine from a 'desktop' in quite small numbers and for not very much money -- didn't exist. But electronic things were just starting to happen, and the first number of Ambit we partly set ourselves on a machine called a variotyper. It enabled us to paste down visual work of which we had some good drawings from an Australian artist, Oliffe Richmond, in this first number and enabled us to begin the notion of producing an arts magazine rather than the traditional poetry or Eng. Lit. magazine. I'd say there's still no magazine in the country that combines high class artwork, produced and found by Mike Foreman over the years, alongside writers who I think are exciting.' GEORGE, David Lloyd (1863-1945); Stevenson, Frances (1888-1972): An autograph letter signed by Frances Stevenson on behalf of George about wartime passport instructions for WSPU suffragettes Emmeline Pankhurst and Grace Roe, 15 September 1916. Autograph letter signed, written entirely… in the hand of Frances Stevenson as Lloyd George's private secretary, on War Office, Whitehall stationery embossed Secretary of State for War; 120 x 190 mm, a single sheet folded, written on the first and fourth sides. Addressed To the Officer in Charge, Passport Office and signed F. L. Stevenson, with her office added beneath. Two former paperclip positions have caused rust staining and small areas of paper loss, otherwise very good. 'Mr Lloyd George would be much obliged if you will see that Mrs Pankhurst and Miss Grace Roe obtain facilities to travel backwards and forwards between London and Paris whenever they have occasion to do so'. An uncommon First World War document about two leading members of the militant suffrage movement. Mrs Pankhurst is Emmeline Pankhurst, founder and leader of the Women's Social and Political Union, while Grace Roe was a senior WSPU organiser who had acted as an intermediary between the organisation in Britain and Christabel Pankhurst in Paris. The letter was written while Lloyd George was Secretary of State for War, several months before he replaced Asquith as Prime Minister. It directs the Passport Office to facilitate unrestricted wartime movement between London and Paris for Pankhurst and Roe, at a time when international travel was closely controlled. The intervention shows the transformed relationship between the government and the formerly militant suffragettes during the war, when Emmeline Pankhurst suspended the WSPU campaign and placed her organisation behind the national war effort. Written and signed by Frances Stevenson, Lloyd George's private secretary, mistress and later his second wife. Signed by Author(s).

Both films were produced and released by Twentieth Century-Fox. To our knowledge, snapshot-size reference photographs were utilized only by Twentieth Century-Fox, during a period roughly between 1940-1965, and are very scarce, particularly in the keybook format. Based on the 1956 novel by Grace Metalious. Gossip is pervasive in a small New England town, leading everyone to do what they can to hide their secrets and scandals until they boil over.
