Government of India launched a watershed development programme during the year 1983 84 with an objective to develop natural resources viz. land water vegetation and productivity of crops in addition to improvement of standard of living of the people. Based on the experience gained during 1983 90 the Watershed Development Programme has been expanded further to cover larger areas. Government of India through its Ministries of Agriculture Rural Development forestry managed the Watershed Development Programme in India. Further it was allotted even to non governmental organizations under the policy of government and private partnership so as to execute the works more effectively. However NGOs concentrated on water resource development so as to improve the irrigated area for improving the livelihood security of rural people on watershed basis unlike government departments which concentrated on overall development of natural resources and agriculture production. History reveals that civilization began in an environment of irrigation agriculture and the downfall of civilization was determined by water logging and salinity. Salinity is the major and ever present threat to the permance of irrigation agriculture. Unless salinity is controlled productivity decreases land values drop and in several cases the land is completely abandoned. Quality of irrigation water is one of the main factors to be understood in irrigated agriculture. Injudicious irrigations even with good quality waters may also turn good soil into saline or alkali conditions. The use of saline waters is inescapable in some areas where no alternative facility for irrigation is available. Such waters are being used knowing full well that the quality and yield of the crop would continuously decrease. The information and techniques presented in this monograph aim at the improvement of existing irrigation practices with a view to protect the lands from further deterioration and obtain maximum possible yields under the prevailing adverse conditions in areas where soils are irrigated with saline water. Irrespective of the source of irrigation water some salts are always dissolved therein. These salts affected the physical and chemical properties of the soil and ultimately the crop growth. In the arid and semi arid regions irrigation is essential for successful agriculture and in some areas particularly in the arid zone the main sources of irrigation is ground water which is usually saline with varying degrees of salt concentration. Such saline waters have been in use since decades with adverse effects on soil productivity and crop growth. Saline irrigation water resources can be better utilised by giving due consideration to the whole complex of soil water plant relationship in a particular agro climatic zone. This however necessitates a thorough knowledge of the quality of irrigation water characteristics of soils being irrigated salt tolerance of crops being grown and agronomic practices. The purpose of this monograph is to bring forth and discuss the problems related to the use of saline irrigation water in agriculture. It has been envisaged that the problems posed in this book will induce the research workers to make further investigation and bring forth solutions to the problems of irrigation with saline water. 308 pp.

References.…Government of India proposed many projects/schemes to improve the socio economic conditions of farmers in India and wanted to transfer technologies from the research stations to farmers fields. The programme like national demonstration Operational Research Project Lab to Land watershed management etc and Krishi Vigyan Kendra was initiated during the year 1974 at Madur Karaikal Pondicherry under the host organization of Government of Pondicherry and subsequently placed under the administrative control of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Based on the activities of this KVK Planning Commission approved the proposal of the ICAR to establish 18 KVKs during the Fifth Five Year Plan. The strength of the KVKs reached to 541 as on today and it may be about 585 because each district in the country will have one KVK irrespective of the size and area of the district. The main functions of the KVKs are to conduct training programmes on farm trials front line demonstrations extension education livelihood programmes etc. The jurisdiction of the KVK is only within the district. This is hoped to cater the needs of farmers farm women rural youth artisans etc. in rural areas. There is no proper documentation till now. Hence this book is proposed to cover all aspects for the benefit of the scientists extension workers administrators planners etc. The KVKs are managed by State Agricultural Universities ICAR Institutions Non Governmental Organizations etc. These are wholly funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research so as to improve the knowledge of the farmers and other rural people in technologies of agriculture and allied enterprises for improving productivities and profitabilities of farming activities so as to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the rural people. 192 pp.
