In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Port Moresby, Gordon and Gotch (P.N.G.) Pty. Ltd. in association with the National Cultural Council of Papua New Guinea, 1980 (facsimile edition)/ 1887. Quarto, [iv], xviii, 194 pages plus 50 plates, each with a captioned guard. Synthetic leather lightly bumped at the ends of the spine; top edge gilt; endpapers a little unevenly tanned; an excellent copy. This edition was produced 'to commemorate the event of Papua New Guinea hosting the 1980 South Pacific Festival of Arts'. John William Lindt (1845-1926) was born at Frankfurt on Main, Germany . At 17 he ran away to sea and joined a Dutch sailing ship. He deserted at Brisbane; by 1863 he was at Grafton as a piano-tuner and then worked in a photographic studio. He visited Germany in 1867 and on his return bought the business. Using the wet-plate process he photographed the Clarence River district and its Aboriginal traditional owners, producing albums in 1875 and 1876. He then sold out and went to Melbourne where he opened a studio in Collins Street. He soon won repute for his society, theatre and landscape photographs. In 1885 Lindt went with Sir Peter Scratchley's expedition to the Protectorate of British New Guinea as official photographer. He presented an album of his New Guinea photographs to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition in London in 1886. He went to Europe to publish his "Picturesque New Guinea" (London, 1887), to visit the optical institutions and manufacturers which he represented and to seek more agencies. He was elected a judge at the international photographic exhibition at Frankfurt, received a gold medal from the Photographic Association of Vienna and became a member of the Royal Geographical Society, London. He had already won medals in exhibitions such as those at Amsterdam, Calcutta and Frankfurt. He was official photographer for the 1888 Melbourne International Exhibition but was not permitted to contest any awards' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). However, he was awarded a gold medal there 'with special mention for his ethnological photographs, landscapes and photographs from shipboard; they are simply unique. From a technical point of view the mentioned pictures may be considered as the best in this Exhibition. The ethnological illustrations from New Guinea are even more interesting .' (judges' report). Provenance: Anthony Crawford, anthropologist and publisher, with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper.

Modern green binder's cloth (with new endpapers) lettered in gilt on the spine and ruled in blind, with the decorative gilt title from the original front cover now mounted as a large front cover title-label (a little mottled and flecked); top edge gilt, others uncut; a few minor repairs using archival tape; scattered foxing; shallow tidemarks to some tissue-guards; minor signs of age and use; overall, a good copy, with the plates in very good to excellent condition. In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, cabinet card format (165 x 110 mm), verso with Lindt's illustrated advertisement for his studio at 7 Collins Street East, with a superb lithographic view of Melbourne's Government House seen from the Botanic Gardens at centre, and below it a cartouche listing Lindt?s major portfolios (Album of Australian Aboriginals; Characteristic Australian Forest Scenery; Genre Pictures of Bush Characters; Men of Mark; and distinguished Visitors to Victoria) as well as the studio?s photographic awards (medals for exhibitions in Philadelphia, Paris, Sydney, Brisbane, Sandhurst, Melbourne, Christchurch, Amsterdam, Calcutta); the print has some scattered foxing and light marks, the verso of the mount is toned and has a couple of little dents at left edge. Renowned German-born photographer J. W. Lindt is best known for his famous series of tableau portraits of Clarence Valley Aboriginal people taken in his studio in Prince Street, Grafton, in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, around 1873. The spectacular lithographic back mark on this cabinet card is the later of two designs used by Lindt while at his 7 Collins Street East address, following his move to Melbourne in the mid 1870s. The earlier and perhaps better known of the two back marks featured a bird's-eye view of Melbourne. In 1889 Lindt relocated his studio to 294 Collins Street.

A rare image capturing a performance by a group of Ambrym men playing traditional single bamboo flutes. The photograph was probably taken by German-born Australian photographer J.W. Lindt, who visited the New Hebrides in 1889 and 1890-91. For an illustrated essay on this type of musical instrument, see Kirk W.
