The recent excavations at Kebara Cave in Israel, undertaken by an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers, has provided data crucial for understanding the cognitive and behavioral differences between archaic and modern humans. In this first of two volumes, the authors discuss site formation processes, subsistence strategies, land-use patterns, and intrasite organization. Hearths and faunal remains reveal a dynamic and changing settlement system during the late Mousterian period, when Kebara Cave served as a major encampment. The research at Kebara Cave allows archaeologists to document the variability observed in settlement, subsistence, and technological strate-gies of the Late Middle and Early Upper Paleolithic periods in the Levant. i Ofer Bar-Yosef is the MacCurdy Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology in the Department of Anthropology, Harvard University. Liliane Meignen is Directeur de Recherches of the Centre d`Études en Préhistoire, Antiquité, Moyen Age (CEPAM) at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Université Nice-Sophia Antipolis. "The very prominent role of Near Eastern archaeology in Middle Palaeolithic research today can be attributed to this highly visible international project. This monograph represents an important step in the publication of Kebara Cave that should interest a wide audience of prehistorians and archaeolo-gists and will undoubtedly prove to be a key publication in the field of Near Eastern prehistoric archaeology." -Ariane Burke, Université de Montréal Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 788.

Work at the cave by earlier excavators is also discussed. Although analysis of the Kebara materials is still far from completed, an overview of the current stage of the investigations includes (1) a synthesis of the site`s complex stratigraphy and dating; (2) a description of the spatial patterning of hearths, ash lenses, and bone and arti-fact concentrations; (3) results of in situ mineralogical studies of cave sediments to determine whether the observed spatial dis-tribution of fossil animal bones is an accurate reflection of past human and/or scavenger activities in the cave or an artifact of differential postdepositional bone loss through groundwater disso-lution; (4) a synthesis of the Mousterian stone tool assemblages focusing on the technology of tool production as reflected in chaînes opératoires (a brief summary of the site`s Upper Paleo-lithic assemblages is also provided); (5) an in-depth taphonomic analysis of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic mammalian fauna looking specifically at the ungulates; and (6) an inventory of the Middle Paleolithic human remains recovered to date, as well as information concerning the deliberate burial of a nearly complete adult man.
