Lt. Col. Patterson was a British Cavalry officer, hunter and author and he details his experiences during the construction of a railway bridge over the River Tsavo in the East Africa Protecturate in 1898. He describes attacks by two man-eating lions on workers building the Uganda Railway and how he managed to kill them. Other stories concern local wildlife, local tribes and various hunting expeditions. A final appendix contains advice to sportsmen visiting British East Africa.
