Zustand: Sehr gut. XIV; 1016 p. Small abrasions on the cover. Otherwise good and clean. - Einband leicht berieben. Sonst gut und sauber. - Preface: From the 1983 publication of the second edition of this book to 1995 when the third edition was issued, the already swollen river of new knowledge and techniques in the neurosciences in general-in neuropsychology in particular-grew into a torrent. Since 1995, that torrent continues to mount at such a rapid rate that it threatens to inundate the individual neuroscience-based researcher or practitioner with more important new data and evolving examination and treatment techniques than any conscientious person can absorb, much less incorporate into practice or research. In our review of the literature, two aspects of neuropsychology's evolutionary path came to our attention. Unlike previous editions, we find a geographic expansion in authorship: No longer do virtually all of the authors come from North America or Europe; rather, important contributions now come from all the continents (except Antarctica-as yet). The other evolutionary trend is that fewer articles and books have sin-gle authorship; most now are collaborative efforts. Neuropsychological Assessment-4 is no exception. When the first edition of this book appeared in 1976, the goal of providing a satisfactory knowledge base and acquainting the reader with almost all of the neuropsychological assessment techniques was reasonable. Today this goal cannot be achieved: one can anticipate that in the weeks between the time we send this edition off to be printed and the time it becomes available to the public, new research findings and changes in significant theoretical concepts and technical innovations will have made some parts of this book outdated or controversial, and will have created important omissions in other parts. Moreover, in perusing the ever-growing flood of books, journals, newsletters, and advertisements in neuropsychology and related neurosciences, we have had to .acknowledge the impossibility of presenting all the research, theories, and examination techniques relevant to neuropsychological assessment. This has altered the goal for this book from giving our readers an exhaustive coverage of neuropsychology and its related fields to providing a broad but necessarily and selectively restricted range of the information that is currently relevant and necessary for understanding and undertaking neuropsychological assessment. Although its size has increased, the organization of this book remains the same as in the third edition. The first eight chapters offer an empirically based, conceptual foundation for understanding the critical elements of neuropsychological assessment: who, when, why, and-in general terms-how. These chapters should also serve as an information resource as we have attempted to provide as extensive and current a set of references as feasible. Chapter sequences for the test compendium remain the same. Like its predecessor, this fourth edition of Neuropsychological Assessment has an updated Appendix containing names and addresses of test publishers. We regret the absence of an Author Index, but so many authors will have so many citations that such an index has lost its usefulness. If some readers are curious about how a single-authored book became a team product, they may wish to know that, yes we did distribute topics-sometimes chapters, sometimes chapter sections, and in the case of Chapter 7, we allotted diseases to one another. Although most assignments were the responsibility of just one of us, a few had two or more authors. We believe the book has benefitted from this collaborative effort. We hope our readers do too.
